Diagnostic Procedure

- Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Start engine and allow it to idle. Measure battery voltage while engine is idling. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If voltage is 10 volts or more, Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access D SW, S SW and L SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Monitor PID values while moving gearshift lever through specified ranges. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH PID VALUES table. If TR switch PID values are as specified, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If TR switch PID values are not as specified, leave scan tool connected and go to next step.
- Using scan tool, continue to monitor D SW, S SW and L SW PID values while slowly moving gearshift lever through specified ranges. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH PID VALUES table. If TR switch PID values changed to ON momentarily while moving gearshift lever slowly from "P" to "L" position, adjust TR switch. See appropriate SERVICING article. If TR switch PID values do not change to ON, attempt to change PID values while wiggling TR switch wiring harness and connector. If TR switch PID values change while wiggling wiring harness and/or connector, repair connector or wiring harness. If TR switch PID values still do not change, leave scan tool connected to DLC and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TR switch connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access D SW, S SW and L SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Connect jumper wire between specified TR switch harness connector terminals while monitoring specified TR switch PID. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH POWER & SIGNAL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION table. If PID value does not change from OFF to ON when jumper wire is connected, go to next step. If PID value changes from OFF to ON when jumper wire is connected, check TR switch "D", "S" and "L" position internal circuits. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If TR switch is faulty, replace TR switch. If TR switch is okay, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step.TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH POWER & SIGNAL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION
Monitored PID (1) Jumper Between TR Switch Harness Connector Terminals D SW "A" & "B" S SW "A" & "G" L SW "A" & "C" (1) When jumper wire is connected between terminals, PID value should change from OFF to ON. - Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and TR switch harness connector terminal "A". See Figure. If battery voltage is not present, check for blown METER fuse (15-amp) and/or repair open in power circuit to TR switch. If battery voltage is present, check PCM connector for damage or pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If PCM connector is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between specified TR switch harness connector and PCM harness connector terminals. See Figure and Figure
. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH CIRCUIT CONTINUITY CHECK table. If continuity exists, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in affected circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH CIRCUIT CONTINUITY CHECK (1)
PCM Harness Connector Terminal Wire Color TR Switch Harness Connector Terminal 2I Red/Blue "B" 2M Light Green/Black "G" 2R Blue/Orange "C" (1) Continuity should exist between PCM and TR switch harness connector terminals. - Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access RPM, VS, D SW, S SW and L SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle in each range ("D", "2" and "1") with RPM PID value at 530 RPM or more, and VS PID value at 12 MPH for at least 2 minutes. Determine if DTC P0706 is still present. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If serviced DTC resets, replace PCM. If DTC does not reset, repair is complete.
