Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda Millenia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For instrument cluster terminal and circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS in appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  1. Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Is instrument cluster DTCs 10 or 12 detected? If yes and DTC 12 is displayed, see appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If DTC 10 is displayed, go to step  8. If neither DTC 10 or 12 is detected, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See Fig 1. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Is connection okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  12.
  4. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at instrument cluster terminal 2S (harness-side). See Figure. Is there 5 volts at instrument cluster terminal 2S (harness-side)? If yes, replace instrument cluster, then go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Is connection okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace terminals or connector, then go to step  12.
  6. Check for continuity between instrument cluster terminal 2S (harness-side) and PCM connector terminal 1C. See Figure. Is there continuity? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to step  12.
  7. Check for continuity between instrument cluster terminal 2S (harness-side) and body ground. Is there any continuity? If yes, repair or replace harness, then go to step  12. If no, repair instrument cluster, then go to step  12.
  8. Is ABS/TCS HU/CM DTC detected? If yes, see appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If no, go to next step.
  9. Disconnect ABS/TCS HU/CM connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.) or bent terminals. Is connection okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace connector and/or terminals, then go to step  12.
  10. Check for continuity between ABS/TCS HU/CM terminal "Q" (harness-side) and instrument cluster terminal 3R (harness-side). Is there continuity? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to step  12.
  11. Check for continuity between ABS/TCS HU/CM terminal 3R (harness-side) and body ground. Is there any continuity? If yes, repair or replace harness, then go to next step. If no, inspect ABS/TCS HU/CM, then go to next step.
  12. Start engine and warm to 140°F (60°C) or more. Using scan tool, access TURBINE, 1GR and D SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle until TURBINE PID value is 1500 RPM or more, 1GR value is ON and D SW PID value is ON for 16 seconds or more. Determine if DTC P0500 is still present. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If serviced DTC resets, replace PCM. If DTC does not reset, repair is complete.
