Oil Seal (Differential) Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner component. (See INTAKE AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  3. Remove the under cover.
  4. Drain the ATF. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT .)
    CAUTION:
    • The oil seal is easily damaged by the sharp edges of the drive shaft splines. Do not let the splines contact the oil seal.
  5. Remove the drive shaft and joint shaft (See JOINT SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ] .) (See DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ] .)
    CAUTION:
    • Do not damage the transaxle case.
    • Do not damage the differential case.
  6. Remove the oil seal lip using a razor.
  7. Remove and discard the oil seal using a tapewrapped flathead screwdriver.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not damage the oil seal.

  8. Using the SST  and a hammer, tap a new oil seal so that the specified oil seal position is obtained.

  9. Install the drive shaft and joint shaft. (See JOINT SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ] .) (See DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ] .)
  10. Add ATF to the specified level. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT .)
  11. Install the air cleaner component. (See INTAKE AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  12. Connect the negative cable.
  13. Perform the mechanical system test. (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST .)
