Installation (Millenia)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install cylinder head gasket onto cylinder block, paying attention to "L" and "R" identification marks on head gaskets.
  2. Install NEW "O" ring onto oil control plugs. Coat "O" rings with engine oil. Install cylinder head. Apply engine oil onto cylinder head bolt threads and cylinder head bolt-to-cylinder head contact surfaces. Install cylinder head bolts and tighten in sequence to specification. See Figure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. After tightening head bolts to torque specification, put a paint mark onto each head bolt. Using paint mark as a reference, further tighten head bolts 85-95 degrees in sequence, then tighten an additional 85-95 degrees. See Figure.
  4. Install engine support. Remove No. 3 engine mount bracket. Install camshafts and camshaft pulley using proper installation procedure. See CAMSHAFT . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
  5. Before installing valve cover and gasket, apply sealant at specified areas onto cylinder head. See Fig 1. Apply sealant to valve cover, and install NEW gasket into valve cover. Install valve cover and gasket.
  6. Install and tighten valve cover bolts in sequence to specification using several steps. See Figure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install distributor and hold-down bolt. Install remaining components. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill and bleed cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING . Adjust ignition timing.
