Engine Removal/Installation: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
  • Fuel vapor is hazardous. It can very easily ignite, causing serious injury and damage. Always keep sparks and flames away from fuel.
  • Fuel line spills and leakage are dangerous. Fuel can ignite and cause serious injuries or death and damage. Fuel can also irritate skin and eyes. To prevent this, always complete the"Fuel Line Safety Procedure". (See FUEL LINE SAFETY PROCEDURE .)
  1. Remove the under cover.
  2. Drain the engine coolant. (See COOLING SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS .)
  3. Drain the ATF (ATX). (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT .)
  4. Remove the plug hole plate. (See TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  5. Remove the battery and battery tray.
  6. Remove the air cleaner, intake air duct and vacuum hose. (See INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  7. Disconnect the ATF hose and selector cable (ATX). (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  8. Disconnect the shift cable, selector cable and clutch release cylinder (MTX). (See MANUAL TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
  9. Disconnect the plastic fuel hose. (See PLASTIC FUEL HOSE REMOVAL NOTE .) (See PLASTIC FUEL HOSE INSTALLATION NOTE .)
  10. Disconnect the engine and PCM wiring harness
  11. Remove the joint shaft (RH). (See AXLE SHAFTS .)
  12. Disconnect the drive shaft (LH) from the transaxle. (See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .)
  13. Remove the front crossmember. (See FRONT CROSSMEMBER .)
  14. Remove the front drive belt. (See DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT .)
  15. Remove the oil level gauge pipe. (See TIMING CHAIN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  16. Disconnect the P/S oil pump pipes and drain the P/S fluid reservoir.
  17. Remove the A/C compressor. (See A/C COMPRESSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  18. Remove the TWC (LH) (See EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  19. Remove the front pipe. (See EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  20. Disconnect the radiator hose and heater hose.
  21. Remove in the order indicated in the figure.
  22. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  23. Start the engine and:
    1. Inspect for the engine oil, engine coolant, transaxle oil and fuel leakage.
    2. Verify the ignition timing, idle speed and idle mixture. (See IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION .) (See IDLE SPEED INSPECTION .) (See IDLE MIXTURE INSPECTION .)
      NOTE:
      • If the engine is overhauled and installed to the vehicle, perform the road test and verify that there is no abnormality.
