Test H: Tachometer Inaccurate

NOTE: If vehicle is equipped with 4-cylinder engine, start at step  2.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C-216. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and ground and retest system.
  2. Disconnect remaining instrument cluster harness connectors. Measure resistance of printed circuit between tachometer pins (in center of clips) and corresponding instrument cluster connector terminals. See TACHOMETER PRINTED CIRCUIT MEASUREMENTS  table. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If any resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit.
  3. Start engine. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C-214 terminal No. 15. If voltage reading is 3-9 volts, replace tachometer. If voltage reading is not 3-9 volts, an open or short exists in PCM. Check PCM connectors for corrosion or damage. If no problem exists, substitute a known-good PCM and retest system.
