Test G: Tachometer Inoperative

NOTE: If vehicle is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, start at step 2.

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C-216. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and ground. Retest system.
Disconnect negative battery cable and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector B-111. Install EEC-V 104-Pin Breakout Box (014-00950) following manufacturer's instructions. Leave PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between terminal No. 15 (Tan/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-214 and terminal No. 68 at breakout box. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, remove breakout box. Reconnect PCM and negative battery cable and go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Tan/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and PCM. Retest system.
Measure voltage at terminal No. 15 (Tan/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-214 with ignition switch in START position. If voltage is 5-8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 5-8 volts, check PCM connector terminals for corrosion or damage. If no problem exists, temporarily substitute a known-good PCM and retest system.
Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Measure resistance of printed circuit between tachometer pins (in center of clips) and corresponding instrument cluster connector terminals. See TACHOMETER PRINTED CIRCUIT MEASUREMENTS table. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, replace tachometer. If any resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit.
