Test B: Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

  1. Test coolant temperature gauge. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE  under COMPONENT TESTS. If coolant temperature gauge is okay, replace coolant temperature sensor and retest system. If coolant temperature gauge does not test properly, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor harness connector. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C-215. Measure resistance in Red/White wire between terminal No. 3 at instrument cluster harness connector C-215 and coolant temperature sensor harness connector. See Figure. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Red/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-215. Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short in Red/White wire and retest system.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C-216. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. On vehicles equipped with tachometer, measure voltage at terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. See Figure. On vehicles not equipped with tachometer, measure voltage at terminal No. 8 (Red/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and fuse No. 11 and retest system.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-215. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire between instrument cluster and ground and retest system.
  5. Measure resistance between coolant temperature gauge clips "B" and "S". Resistance should be 214-256 ohms. Measure resistance between instrument cluster temperature gauge clips "G" and "S". Resistance should be 90-110 ohms. If resistance readings are as specified, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest system. If resistance readings are not as specified, replace temperature gauge and retest system.
