Road Test

  1. Place selector lever in Park and start engine. Stop engine and repeat starting procedure in all gear ranges, including Neutral. Drive vehicle to slight upgrade and park vehicle. Place selector lever in Park and release parking brake. Make sure vehicle remains locked in place.
  2. Shift from "P" to "R" range and note quality of shift engagement. Drive vehicle in Reverse long enough to detect any slippage or other problems. Shift from "R" and "D" ranges, in and out of "N" range while noting shift quality. Release parking brake while vehicle is in "N" range. Make sure vehicle does not "creep" when accelerator is lightly depressed.
NOTE: If transmission is new or recently rebuilt, vehicle might have some slight movement. This is NOT cause for concern.
  3. Move selector lever from "N" to "D" range and check shift. Road test vehicle in "D" range. Check vehicle speeds at upshift and downshift points. See SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  . Note points at which shifting shock and clutch engagement occur.
  4. On E4N71B models, compare shift speed as accelerator is depressed slowly and quickly. Ensure overdrive range cannot be selected when power shift switch is on or overdrive cancel switch is off.
  5. On all models, make sure transmission gives 3-2 downshift during kickdown of accelerator from partial throttle position. Check this function in "D3 " range at 40-53 MPH. Repeat kickdown test from partial throttle position for 2-1 downshift in "D2 " range at 16-22 MPH.
  6. Make sure transmission does not shift into 1st or 3rd ranges while selector lever is in "2" position. Place selector lever in "D" range and drive vehicle at 25-31 MPH. Move selector lever into "2" range and make sure that transmission downshifts into 2nd gear.
  7. Drive vehicle with selector lever in "1" range. Transmission should not upshift at any time. Engine compression should brake vehicle speed in closed throttle position. Place selector lever into "D" or "2" range and drive at 12-19 MPH. Move selector lever to "1" range and make sure that transmission downshifts to 1st gear.
  8. Compare vehicle speeds and gear shifts at different throttle positions. Ensure all values are within specified ranges of SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  during road test.
