Removal And Installation: Transmission: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Battery Tray .
    2. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille .

  3. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

    Remove the retainers and the RH and LH cowl filler panels.

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

  4. Remove the front subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe .

    All wheel drive (AWD) 

  5. Remove the transfer case. Refer to: Power Transfer Unit - Vehicles With: Power Transfer Unit Oil-to-Coolant Cooler 2.7L EcoBoost .

    All vehicles 

  6. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the RH air cleaner outlet pipe and the RHCAC intake pipe. Remove the coupler and the clamps from the RH air cleaner outlet pipe.

  7. Loosen the clamps and remove the LHCAC intake pipe.

  8. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the RHCAC intake pipe.

    1. Remove the nut.
    2. Remove the bolt.

    • Remove the engine appearance cover.

    • If the engine appearance cover stud bolt is loosened or removed, it must be installed/tightened.

      Torque

      : 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

  10. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.

  11. Remove the retainers and the PCM.

  12. Disconnect the tubes, remove the bolt and remove the RH air cleaner outlet pipe.

  13. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the bolt and the RHCAC intake pipe.

  14. Disconnect the LHHO2S and the LH catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.

    • Disconnect the cable from the manual control lever.

    • Remove the bolts and position the cable aside.

  16. Remove the bolts and the transmission-to-transmission fluid warmer tube.

  17. Loosen the transmission fluid cooler tube fittings and support the cooler tubes.

  19. Remove the nut and the transmission fluid bypass valve.

  21. Inspect the transmission fluid warmer to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission fluid warmer. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission fluid warmer, remove the seals and backing rings.

  22. Remove the bolt and the transmission fluid cooler bypass valve-to-transmission tube.

  23. Remove the bolts and position aside the transmission fluid warmer.

  25. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor (303-06 Starting System).
  26. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.

  27. Disconnect the PCV tube and position aside.

  28. Remove the bolt and position aside the vacuum harness pressure sensor.

  29. Detach the wire harness retainers from the studbolts and hose support. Remove the bolts and position aside the ground wire and the hose support.

  30. Install the special tools on the engine.

    1. Straight side of the special tool.
    2. Sloped side of the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1246 Engine Spreader Bar., 303-1634 Lift Eyes (2).

  31. Using the special tools, support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine.

    1. Remove and discard the transmission support insulator bracket bolt.
    2. Remove and discard the transmission support insulator bracket bolts and remove the bracket.

  33. Remove and discard the rear roll restrictor bolt.

  34. Remove the wiring harness retainer, remove and discard the bolts, lower the transmission and remove the transmission support insulator.

  35. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission. Install the drain plug.

    Torque

    : 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

  36. Remove the LH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH .

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

  37. Remove and discard the halfshaft retaining strap and nuts.

  38. Position the RH halfshaft aside and support with a length of mechanics wire.

  40. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner 2.7L EcoBoost .
  41. Detach the wiring harness retainers, slide up the insulator. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  42. Remove the bolts the studbolt and position aside the A/C compressor.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

    1. Slide the locking clip.
    2. Press the tab.
    3. While pressing the tab, rotate the connector latch.

    Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  55. Remove the RH and LH transmission-to-engine bolts.

  56. Separate the transmission from the engine and install the special tool and remove the transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  57. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, remove the manual control lever.

    Remove the nut and the manual control lever.

  58. Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

  59. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carryout the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Clean the transmission-mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes by hand. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
