Removal And Installation: Transmission: Installation

All vehicles 

1. NOTE: Make sure that when installing the manual control lever, it is fully seated onto the manual control lever shaft. Damage to the manual control lever shaft will occur and the manual lever will come loose.
   NOTE: Make sure to hold the manual control lever while tightening the manual control lever nut or damage to the manual control lever and park components will occur.

   Install the manual control lever and the nut.

   Torque

   : 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

2. Using a transmission jack, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack Use the General Equipment: Retaining Strap

3. Position the balance mark (paint dot, sticker, or laser etch) near the 12 O'clock position. Then rotate the converter to position the nearest converter stud at the starter opening.

4. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with Multi-Purpose Grease. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

   Material

   : Motorcraft® Multi-Purpose Grease Spray / XL-5-A (ESB-M1C93-B)

5. NOTE: The Balance mark on the torque converter must be above the crankshaft centerline when the first torque converter nut is tightened.
   NOTE: This step is only necessary if installing the original torque converter.

   Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to align the index marks made during removal.

6. NOTE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

   If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

7. Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

8. Position the transmission on the dowel pins and install the RH and LH transmission-to-engine bolts.

   Torque

   : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

9. Install the transmission support insulator, new bolts and install the wiring harness retainer.

   Torque

   : 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

10. Install a new rear roll restrictor bolt.

    Torque

    : 111 lb.ft (150 Nm)

11. 1. Install the transmission support insulator bracket and new bolts.

       Torque

       : 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

    2. Install a new transmission support insulator bracket bolt.

       Torque

       : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

12. Install the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque

13. Install the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.

14. Position the ground cable and install the retainer.

15. Position back the wiring harness, install the wiring harness retainers and the nut.

16. Connect the transmission electrical connector.
    1. Rotate the connector latch until it locks in place.
    2. Slide the locking clip back to its original position.

24. Tighten the A/C compressor bolts and studbolt in the sequence shown.

25. Connect the wiring harness retainers, connect the electrical connectors and slide up the insulator.

26. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner 2.7L EcoBoost .

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

27. Install the catalytic converter bracket and the bolts.
    1. Torque

       : 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

    2. Torque

       : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

28. 1. Inspect the RH halfshaft seal surface.
    2. Inspect the differential side gear splines.

29. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Install a new RH halfshaft seal. Refer to: Halfshaft Seal RH - FWD  .

30. Install the RH halfshaft until the intermediate shaft bearing is centered in the intermediate shaft bearing support bracket.

31. Install the new halfshaft retaining strap and the new halfshaft retaining strap nuts.

    Torque

32. Install the LH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft LH .
33. Install the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor (303-06 Starting System).
34. Position the ground wire and hose support, install the bolts. Attach the wire harness retainers to the studbolts and the hose support.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

41. Inspect and lubricate the band seal and backing ring.

    2. Band seal (7D285).

57. Install the coupler and the clamps onto the RH air cleaner outlet pipe. Connect the RH air cleaner outlet pipe and the RHCAC intake pipe and tighten the clamps.

58. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Power Transfer Unit - Vehicles With: Power Transfer Unit Oil-to-Coolant Cooler 2.7L EcoBoost .

59. Install the front subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe .

    All vehicles 

60. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

    Install the RH and LH cowl filler panels and the retainers.

61. Install the following items:
    1. Refer to: Battery Tray .
    2. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille .

62. Fill the transmission with transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill  .
63. After completing the repairs, perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure using a diagnostic scan tool.
64. If a new main control body is installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download  .
65. If a new main control valve body is installed, install a new solenoid body identification tag.
