Removal And Installation: Transmission: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Battery Tray .
    2. Refer to: Front Subframe .
    3. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
    4. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe RH .

  3. Loosen the clamp and position aside the CAC intake lower pipe RH.

  4. Loosen the clamp and position aside the CAC upper intake pipe RH.

    1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Detach the retainer and position the EVAP canister purge valve tube aside.

    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Disconnect the bypass valve electrical connector and remove the CAC intake pipe RH.

  5. Detach the coolant hose from the starter motor bracket.

  6. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .
  7. Detach the wire harness retainers, slide the insulator up and disconnect the electrical connectors.

  8. Remove the bolts the studbolt and position aside the A/C compressor.

  9. Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.

  10. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  11. Remove and discard the nuts. Remove the LH catalytic converter.

    All wheel drive (AWD) 

  13. Remove the power transfer unit. Refer to: Power Transfer Unit .

    All vehicles 

    1. Disconnect the cable from the manual control lever.
    2. Remove the bolt and position the cable aside.

  14. Remove the nut from the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket.

  15. Remove and discard the bolts and remove the transmission to transmission fluid warmer cooler tube.

  16. Remove the transmission fluid warmer to cooler bypass cooler tube.

    1. Remove and discard the bolt.
    2. Loosen the fitting and remove the transmission fluid warmer to cooler bypass cooler tube.

  17. Inspect the transmission fluid warmer to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission fluid warmer. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission fluid warmer, remove the seals and backing rings.

  18. Remove the bolts and position aside the transmission fluid warmer.

  19. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  20. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.

  21. Disconnect the PCV tube and position aside.

  22. Remove the bolt and position aside the vacuum harness pressure sensor.

    1. Remove the ground wire bolt from the RH cylinder head.
    2. Detach the retainers and position the ground wire aside.

  23. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the RH cowl filler panel.

  24. Remove the retainers and the RH and LH cowl filler panels.

  25. Install the special tools on the engine.

    1. Straight side of the special tool.
    2. Sloped side of the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1246 Engine Spreader Bar., 303-1634 Lift Eyes (2).

  26. Using the special tools, support the engine. Use Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine.

  27. Remove the nuts, the bolt and the transmission support insulator bracket.

  28. Remove the transmission support insulator studs.

  30. NOTE: If necessary, move the transmission slightly forward to remove the restrictor bolt.

    Remove the rear roll restrictor bolt and the transmission support insulator.

  31. Remove the transmission cooler bypass valve to transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latch.

  32. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission cooler bypass valve to transmission fluid cooler tube. Use Special Service Tool: 307-569 Disconnect Tool TOC Line (1/2).

  33. Remove the transmission fluid cooler to transmission cooler bypass valve tube secondary latch.

  34. Using the special tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler to transmission cooler bypass valve tube. Use Special Service Tool: 307-569 Disconnect Tool TOC Line (1/2).

  35. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission. Install the drain plug.

    Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

  36. Position aside and support the LH halfshaft.

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

  38. Remove the LH catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH .
  39. Remove and discard the halfshaft retaining strap and nuts.

  40. Position the RH halfshaft aside and support with a length of mechanics wire.

  42. Remove the bolts and the roll restrictor bracket.

  44. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

  46. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.

    Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

    1. Remove the ground cable nut.
    2. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer.
    3. If equipped, remove the RH transmission-to-engine bolt.

  49. Separate the transmission from the engine and install the special tool and remove the transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  51. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, remove the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes.

    Remove and discard the bolt, remove the nut and the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes.

  52. Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.

  53. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry-out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Clean the transmission-mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes by hand. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
