Oil pan: Removal

2wd/4wd 

  1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist. refer to: Jacking and lifting - overview .
  2. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.

    1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  3. Remove the oil level indicator.

  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Upper air cleaner outlet pipe. refer to: Air cleaner outlet pipe .
    2. Refer to: Air cleaner .

  5. NOTE: To prevent damage to the transmission, do not loosen the transmission-to-engine fasteners more than 5 mm (0.19 in).

    Loosen the bolts 5 mm (0.19 in).

    • Remove the retainers and the underbody shield.

    • Remove the retainers and the stone guard.

  7. Disconnect the bypass hose, the electrical connector and the wire retainers. Use the general equipment: hose clamp remover/installer

  8. Remove the a/c compressor belt. refer to: Air conditioning (a/c) compressor belt .
  9. Loosen the clamp and position CAC inlet tube off the turbocharger.

  10. Loosen the clamp, remove the nuts and the CAC inlet tube.

    1. Remove the catalytic converter support bracket bolts.
    2. Loosen the catalytic converter support bracket bolt.

  12. Remove the engine roll restrictor bolt and discard.

  13. If equipped, remove the nuts and position the cabin heater coolant pump aside.

  14. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolt and position the a/c tube bracket aside.

  15. NOTE: To prevent damage to the transmission, do not loosen the transmission-to-engine fastener more than 5 mm (0.19 in).

    Loosen the transmission-to-engine bolt 5 mm (0.19 in).

  16. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors and the wiring harness retainer.

    • Remove the nut and stud.

    • Remove the bolts and position the a/c compressor aside and support.

    • Remove the oil pan drain bolt and drain the engine oil. Use the general equipment: oil drain equipment

    • Install the oil pan drain bolt.

      Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 nm)

  19. Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the general equipment: oil drain equipment

  20. Remove the transfer case. refer to: Transfer case .

    2wd/4wd 

  21. NOTE: To prevent damage to the transmission, do not loosen the engine-to-transmission fasteners more than 5 mm (0.19 in).

    Loosen the engine-to-transmission bolts 5 mm (0.19 in).

  22. Remove the oil pan-to-transmission bolt.

  23. Remove the transmission-to-oil pan bolts and position the ground cable aside.

  24. Separate the transmission from the engine 5 mm (0.19 in).

  27. NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc ® bristle disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 rpm, to clean the oil pan. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths.

    • Make sure that the mating faces of the oil pan are clean and free of foreign material. refer to: RTV sealing surface cleaning and preparation .

      Material: motorcraft ® silicone gasket remover /ZC-30-A

      Material: motorcraft ® metal brake parts cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

      Material: motorcraft ® metal surface prep wipes / ZC-31-B

    • Thoroughly wash the oil pan to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.

  28. NOTE: Do not use wire brushes, power abrasive discs or 3M™ Roloc ® bristle disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the sealing surfaces of the engine block. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. They also cause contamination that causes premature engine failure. Remove all traces of the gasket.

    Make sure that the mating faces of the engine block are clean and free of foreign material. refer to: RTV sealing surface cleaning and preparation . Use the general equipment: plastic scraper

    Material: motorcraft ® silicone gasket remover /ZC-30-A

    Material: motorcraft ® metal brake parts cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    Material: motorcraft ® metal surface prep wipes / ZC-31-B
