Test Aw: Instrument Panel Does Not Dim

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous instrument cluster DTCs. Clear instrument cluster DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If no instrument cluster DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If instrument cluster DTC B1246 is retrieved, go to step  3 . If any other instrument cluster DTCs exist, repair code related problems. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn headlights on. Using NGS tester, monitor instrument cluster PID DSWSTAT while rotating panel dimmer switch from lowest to highest position. If PID does not agree with switch position, go to next step. If PID agrees with switch position, replace instrument cluster.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect panel dimmer switch harness connector C206. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 1 (Blue/Yellow wire) at panel dimmer switch harness connector. See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair power distribution circuit as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black wire) at panel dimmer switch harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire between panel dimmer switch and ground.
  5. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Measure resistance in Brown/Yellow wire between terminal No. 4 at panel dimmer switch harness connector and terminal No. 4 at instrument cluster harness connector C220c. See Figure and Figure . Resistance should be 5 ohms or less. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Brown/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If both resistances are as specified, go to next step. If either resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground to ground in Brown/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and panel dimmer switch.
  6. Measure resistance in White/Black wire between terminal No. 3 at panel dimmer switch harness connector and terminal No. 16 at instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Resistance should be 5 ohms or less. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 16 (White/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C220c. Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If both resistances are as specified, replace panel dimmer switch. If either resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in White/Black wire between instrument cluster and panel dimmer switch.
