DTC P0011: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1); DTC P0012: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1); DTC P0021: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2); DTC P0022: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2) [09/2014 - 11/2017]: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read the DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output A
      DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    Result: 

    B 

    GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [09/2014 - 10/2015]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [10/2015 - 08/2016]  , or refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2016 - 11/2017]

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Turn the A/C switch on.
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2).

      Powertrain > Engine > Active Test 

      Tester Display
      Control the VVT Linear (Bank1)

      Powertrain > Engine > Active Test 

      Tester Display
      Control the VVT Linear (Bank2)
    6. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft) using the Techstream.

      OK

      Techstream Operation Engine Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      100% Engine idles roughly or stalls

      HINT: 

      Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1, VVT Change Angle #1, VVT OCV Duty #2, and VVT Change Angle #2].

      Refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST [09/2014 - 10/2015] , or refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST [10/2015 - 11/2017]

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs.

      Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [09/2014 - 11/2017]

      Powertrain > Engine > Clear DTCs 

    5. Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
    6. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    7. Turn the Techstream on.
    8. Start the engine and warm it up.
    9. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.
    11. Read the pending DTCs.

      Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes 

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs are not output A
      DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output B

      HINT: 

      DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 may be stored when foreign matter in the engine oil is caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. That foreign matter may then be captured by the oil filter.

  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT) 
    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft).

      Refer to INSPECTION [09/2014 - 11/2017]

      Result

      Proceed to

    Result:

    REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT). Refer to  REMOVAL [09/2014 - 11/2017]

  5. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE TIMING CHAIN AND JUMPED TEETH) 
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 13

      *a Timing Mark - -
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the "0" timing mark of the timing chain cover.
    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gear assemblies and camshaft timing exhaust gear assemblies are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      If the timing marks are not as shown, turn the crankshaft one revolution clockwise.

      OK

      The timing marks on the camshaft timing gear assemblies and camshaft timing exhaust gear assemblies are aligned as shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      If the result is not as specified, check for mechanical malfunctions that may have affected the valve timing, such as a jumped tooth or stretching of the timing chain.

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND OIL PIPE

    1. Remove the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe.

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 18

    2. Remove the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH.
    3. Check that the oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged.

      OK

      The oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged.

      Result

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly (bank 1 or bank 2).

      Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 28

      HINT: 

      Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the camshaft timing gear assembly.

      Refer to INITIALIZATION [09/2014 - 11/2017]

  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  9. CHECK ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM 
    1. Check for mechanical malfunctions that affect the valve timing, such as a jumped tooth or stretching of the timing chain.

    REPAIR OR REPLACE MALFUNCTIONING PARTS, COMPONENT AND AREA

  10. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
