Inspection Procedure

HINT

The wire harness between the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU and telescopic motor is provided with the steering column assembly.

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Turn the engine switch off.
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG)
    4. Turn the Techstream on
    5. Check that the steering column contracts and extends Enter the following menus: Chassis / Tilt & Telescopic / Active Test

      Tilt & Telescopic 

      ACTIVE TEST DETAIL

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Telesco Telesco operation Operation LONG/SHORT -

      OK: Steering column contracts and extends. 

    NG: Go to step  4

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. INSPECT MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU (VCE TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below

      Standard Voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A-3 (VCE) - A-5 (E2) Engine switch on (IG) 8 to 16 V

    NG: Go to step  5

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT TELESCOPIC POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A-4 (TES) - A-5 (E2) Telescopic steering contracts or extends 11 to 14 V (Pulse HI)
      Below 1 V (Pulse LOW)

    NG: REPLACE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: REPLACE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU  (See REMOVAL  )

  4. INSPECT TELESCOPIC MOTOR 
    1. Disconnect connector A from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
    2. Connect a positive battery lead to terminal A-2 (TEM+) and a negative battery lead to terminal A-6 (TEM-) of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column contracts.

      OK: Steering column contracts. 

    3. Connect a negative battery lead to terminal A-2 (TEM+) and a positive battery lead to terminal A-6 (TEM-) of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column extends.

      OK: Steering column extends. 

    NG: REPLACE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: REPLACE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU  (See REMOVAL  )

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECU - BODY GROUND (VCE CIRCUIT)) 
    1. Disconnect connector A from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A-3 (VCE) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECU - BODY GROUND (GND CIRCUIT)) 
    1. Disconnect the J28 connector from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J28-11 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: REPLACE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU  (See REMOVAL  )
