Inspection Procedure

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Turn the engine switch off.
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG)
    4. Turn the Techstream on
    5. Check that the steering wheel tilts up and down. Enter the following menus. Chassis / Tilt&Telescopic / Active Test.

      Tilt & Telescopic 

      ACTIVE TEST DETAIL

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      Tilt Tilt operation Operation UP/DOWN -

      OK: Steering wheel tilts up and down. 

    NG: Go to step  6

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU - TILT POSITION SENSOR) 
    1. Disconnect the J28 connector from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
    2. Disconnect the J22 connector from the tilt motor.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J28-6 (VCI) - J22-4 (VCI) Always Below 1 Ω
      J28-7 (TIS) - J22-5 (TIS) Always Below 1 Ω
      J28-17 (E1) - J22-6 (E1) Always Below 1 Ω
      J28-6 (VCI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      J28-7 (TIS) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      J28-17 (E1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU - BODY GROUND) 
    1. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J28-11 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. INSPECT MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU (TIS TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Reconnect the J28 connector to the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J28-7 (TIS) - J28-17 (E1) Steering tilts up or tilts down 11 to 14 V (Pulse HI)
      Below 1 V (Pulse LOW)

    NG: REPLACE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT TILT POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      J22-4 (VCI) - J22-6 (E1) Engine switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V
      J22-5 (TIS) - J22-6 (E1) Engine switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V

    NG: REPLACE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: REPLACE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU  (See REMOVAL  )

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU - TILT MOTOR) 
    1. Disconnect the J28 connector from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU
    2. Disconnect the J22 connector from the tilt motor
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J28-10 (TIM+) - J22-1 (TIM+) Always Below 1 Ω
      J28-1 (TIM-) - J22-2 (TIM-) Always Below 1 Ω
      J28-10 (TIM+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      J28-1 (TIM-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. INSPECT TILT MOTOR 
    1. Connect a positive battery lead to terminal TIM+ and a negative battery lead to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts up.

      OK: Steering wheel tilts up. 

    2. Connect a negative battery lead to terminal TIM+ and a positive battery lead to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts down.

      OK: Steering wheel tilts down. 

    NG: REPLACE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: REPLACE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU  (See REMOVAL  )
