Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Lexus IS F. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0771, P0776 AND P2714) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on
    4. Enter the following menus- Powertrain / ECT / Trouble Codes
    5. Read the DTCs using the Techstream

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Display (DTC Output) Proceed to
      Only P0771, P0776 and P2714 are output A
      Only P0776 is output B
      P0771, P0776, P2714, and other DTCs are output C

      HINT

      If any other codes besides P0771, P0776 and P2714 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

    B: Go to step  5

    C: GO TO DTC CHART  (See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART  )

    A: Go to next Step 

  2. CLEAR DTC AND PERFORM STALL SPEED TEST 
    1. Clear the DTCs (See DTC CHECK / CLEAR  ).

      HINT:

      Write down the currently output DTCs before clearing them.

    2. Perform the stall speed test (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TESTS  ).

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Test Condition Proceed to
      Stall speed test can be performed A
      Stall speed test cannot be performed B

    B: Go to step  6

    A: Go to next Step 

  3. CLEAR DTC AND PERFORM RUNNING TEST 
    1. Clear the DTCs (See DTC CHECK / CLEAR  ).

      HINT

      Write down the currently output DTCs before clearing them

    2. Start the engine, drive the vehicle and perform the inspection.

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Test Condition Proceed to
      • Gear cannot be shifted between 1st gear and 4th gear
      • Gear can only be shifted from 4th gear to 5th gear
      • Gear cannot be shifted between 5th gear and 8th gear*
      A
      • Gear can be shifted from 1st gear to 4th gear
      • For 5th gear and above, gear shifts to neutral
      B
      Conditions other than those listed above C
      HINT:
      * If the gear is shifted to 5th gear or above, gear shifts will no longer be able to be performed. When performing the test again, first clear the DTCs.

    B: Go to step  5

    C: Go to step  8

    A: Go to next Step 

  4. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SR 
    1. Remove the shift solenoid valve SR (See DISASSEMBLY  ).
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Shift solenoid SR connector - Shift solenoid SR body 20°C (68°F) 11 to 15 Ω
    3. Connect a battery positive (+) lead to the terminal of the solenoid valve connector, and a negative (-) lead to the solenoid body Then check that the valve moves and makes an operating sound.

      OK: Valve moves and makes an operating sound. 

      Result

    B: Go to step  7

    A: REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SR  (See DISASSEMBLY  )

  5. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL2 
    1. Remove the shift solenoid valve SL2 (See DISASSEMBLY  ).
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Terminal 1 of the shift solenoid valve SL2 - terminal 2 20°C (68°F) 5.0 to 5.6 Ω
    3. Connect a battery positive (+) lead with a 21 W bulb to terminal 2 and a negative (-) lead to terminal 1 of the solenoid valve connector. Then check that the valve moves and makes an operating sound.

      OK: Valve moves and makes an operating sound. 

      Result

    B: Go to step  7

    A: REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL2  (See DISASSEMBLY  )

  6. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SLT 
    1. Remove the shift solenoid valve SLT (See DISASSEMBLY  ).
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Terminal 1 of the shift solenoid valve SLT - terminal 2 20°C (68°F) 5.0 to 5.6 Ω
    3. Connect a battery positive (+) lead with a 21 W bulb to terminal 2 and a negative (-) lead to terminal 1 of the solenoid valve connector Then check that the valve moves and makes an operating sound.

      OK: Valve moves and makes an operating sound.

    NG: REPLACE SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SLT  (See DISASSEMBLY  )

    OK: Go to next Step 

  7. INSPECT TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY 
    1. Check the transmission valve body assembly (See DISASSEMBLY  ).

      OK: There are no foreign objects on any valve. 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: Go to next Step 

  8. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR TERMINAL (NC3 TERMINAL) 
    1. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG)
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value (s) in the table below

      Standard Voltage 

      STANDARD VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      E47-11 (NC3B) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E47-12 (NC3O) - Body ground Always 99 to 101 Ω

    NG: Go to step  10

    OK: Go to next Step 

  9. INSPECT TRANSMISSION WIRE (SPEED SENSOR NC3) 
    1. Disconnect the speed sensor (NC3) connector (See REMOVAL  ).
    2. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Terminal 1 of the speed sensor (NC3) connector -11 (NC3B) Always Below 1 Ω
      Terminal 2 of the speed sensor (NC3) connector -12 (NC3O) Always Below 1 Ω
      Terminal 1 of the speed sensor (NC3) connector or 11 (NC3B) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      Terminal 2 of the speed sensor (NC3) connector or 12 (NC3O) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE TRANSMISSION WIRE  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: REPLACE SPEED SENSOR  (See REMOVAL  )

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (TRANSMISSION WIRE - TCM) 
    1. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    2. Disconnect the TCM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E47-11 (NC3B) - E59-19 (NC3B) Always Below 1 Ω
      E47-12 (NC3O) - E59-18 (NC3O) Always Below 1 Ω
      E47-11 (NC3B) or E59-19 (NC3B) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E47-12 (NC3O) or E59-18 (NC3O) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next Step 

  11. REPLACE TCM 
    1. Replace the TCM (See REMOVAL  )

    NEXT: PERFORM A/T CODE REGISTRATION  (See REGISTRATION  )
