Inspection Procedure

HINT.

  1. CHECK DTC (DTC P0013 OR P0023) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Clear DTCs after recording the freeze frame data and DTCs
    3. Turn the engine switch off.
    4. Allow the engine to idle and check for DTCs
    5. Check if P0013 or P0023 is present

      Result 

      RESULT CHART

      Result Proceed to
      P0013 A
      P0023 B

    B: Go to step  3

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OIL CONTROL VALVE FOR EXHAUST SIDE OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Start the engine and turn the Techstream ON
    3. Warm up the engine
    4. Enter the following menus Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1) Check the engine speed while operating the oil control valve using the Techstream

      OK 

      ENGINE CONDITION TESTER OPERATION CHART

      Tester Operation Engine Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      100% Engine idles roughly

    NG: Go to step  4

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OIL CONTROL VALVE FOR EXHAUST SIDE OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Start the engine and turn the Techstream ON
    3. Warm up the engine
    4. Enter the following menus Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2). Check the engine speed while operating the oil control valve using the Techstream

      OK 

      ENGINE CONDITION TESTER OPERATION CHART

      Tester Operation Engine Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      100% Engine idles roughly

    NG: Go to step 4 

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )

  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the oil control valve assembly for bank 1 and/or bank 2 (See REMOVAL )
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6 9 to 7.9 Ω

    3. Connect a lead from the positive battery terminal to terminal 1, and a lead from the negative battery terminal to terminal 2 Check the valve operation

      OK: Valve moves quickly. 

    4. Reinstall the oil control valve.

    NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (BANK 1 AND/OR BANK 2)  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OIL CONTROL VALVE - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the oil control valve connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E31-1 - E4-4 (OE1+) Always Below 1 Ω
      E31-2 - E4-3 (OE1-) Always Below 1 Ω
      E21-1 - E5-18 (OE2+) Always Below 1 Ω
      E21-2 - E5-28 (OE85-) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E31-1 or E4-4 (OE1+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E31-2 or E4-3 (OE1-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E21-1 or E5-18 (OE2+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E21-2 or E5-28 (OE85-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the oil control valve and ECM connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )
