Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing the master cylinder solenoid, perform zero point calibration (see CALIBRATION  ).

HINT:

Start the inspection from step  1 when using the hand-held tester and start from step 2 when not using the hand-held tester.

  1. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (MASTER CYLINDER PRESSURE SENSOR)
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and push the hand-held tester main switch ON.
    3. Select "DATA LIST" mode on the hand-held tester.
      ITEMS NORMAL CONDITION TABLE

Item Measurement Item/Range (Display) Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      MAS CYL PRESS 1 Master cylinder pressure sensor 1 reading/min.: 0 V, max.: 5 V When brake pedal is released: 0.3 to 0.9 V
When stop light is turned on: 0.3 to 0.9 V
Reading increases when brake pedal is depressed
    4. Check that the master cylinder pressure value of the master cylinder pressure sensor displayed on the hand-held tester changes when depressing the brake pedal.

      Result:

      RESULT REFERENCE

Master cylinder pressure sensor value does not change A
Master cylinder pressure sensor value changes but it is not normal B
Master cylinder pressure sensor value becomes normal C

    B: Go to step   2

    C: Go to step   4

    A: Go to next step

REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (See  OVERHAUL  )

  2. CHECK BRAKE PEDAL AND STOP LIGHT SWITCH INSTALLATION (See  BRAKE PEDAL SUB-ASSY  )
    1. Check the brake pedal height.
    2. Check the stop light switch installation.

OK: The brake pedal and stop light switch are normal.

NG: ADJUST BRAKE PEDAL AND/OR STOP LIGHT SWITCH (See  BRAKE PEDAL SUB-ASSY  )

    OK: Go to next step

  3. INSPECT SKID CONTROL ECU (STP TERMINAL VOLTAGE)
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in TERMINALS VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION TABLE .

      Standard:

      TERMINALS VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION TABLE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
S28-7 (STP) - Body ground Stop light switch ON (Brake pedal depressed) 8 to 14 V
S28-7 (STP) - Body ground Stop light switch OFF (Brake pedal released) Below 1.5 V

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (STP CIRCUIT)

    OK: Go to next step

  4. RECONFIRM DTC
    1. Clear the DTC (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    2. Check if the same DTC is detected (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).

    HINT:

Reinstall the sensors, connectors, etc. and restore the previous vehicle conditions before rechecking for DTCs.

    Result:

    RESULT REFERENCE

    DTC is output A
    DTC is not output B

    B: END

    A: Go to next step

REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (See  OVERHAUL  )
