Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  2. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  3. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH (See step 2 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  5. DRAIN COOLANT (See step 4 in  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
  6. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

    Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  7. REMOVE NO. 1 REAR FLOOR PANEL BRACE (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  8. REMOVE FRONT CENTER FLOOR BRACE (See step 2 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  9. REMOVE OXYGEN SENSOR (See step 3 or 4 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  10. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (See step 5 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  11. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR (See step 2 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  12. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See step 10 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  13. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY (See step 12 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  14. REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY (See step 2 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  15. REMOVE OUTSIDE AIR GUIDE PLATE RH (See step 3 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  16. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (See step 4 in  REMOVAL  ) 
  17. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Remove the flywheel housing side cover from the engine assembly.

  18. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley nut with a wrench and remove the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.

  19. REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and No. 1 exhaust pipe support bracket sub-assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.

  20. SEPARATE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Set the shift lever to the neutral position.
    2. Remove the nut and separate the floor shift gear shifting rod sub-assembly.

  21. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH TRANSFER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.

  22. SEPARATE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and separate the engine rear mounting member from the body.

  23. SEPARATE CONNECTOR 
    1. Remove the bolt and earth wire.

    2. Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.

    3. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

      HINT:

      Disengage the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

  24. SEPARATE WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Remove the 6 bolts and separate the wire harness clamps from the automatic transmission assembly.

  25. SEPARATE WATER BY-PASS HOSE 
    1. Remove the bolt and water by-pass hose clamp.
    2. Separate the 2 water by-pass hoses from the transmission oil cooler.

    NOTE: Use a container to catch any coolant which flows out of the water by-pass hoses.
  26. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH TRANSFER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly.

  27. REMOVE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and engine rear mounting member from the automatic transmission assembly.

  28. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.

  29. REMOVE TRANSFER DYNAMIC DAMPER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and dynamic damper from the automatic transmission assembly.

  30. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER LH 
    1. Remove the nut and transmission control shaft lever LH from the automatic transmission assembly.

  31. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts, transmission oil cooler, and spacer from the automatic transmission assembly.

    2. Remove the 4 O-rings from the valve body down shift plug spacer.

  32. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the torque converter and transmission case.

    2. Remove the torque converter from the automatic transmission assembly.
  33. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (See  INSPECTION   )
