Shift Lever ASSY (ATM): Overhaul
HINT:
COMPONENTS:
- DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
- REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSY
- Remove the shift lever knob sub-assy.
- REMOVE CONSOLE PANEL UPPER FRONT (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH (See step 19 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE RH (See step 25 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSY RH (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSY LH (See step 26 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY LOWER (See step 21 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR ASSY (See step 28 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FLOOR CARPET COVER CENTER LH (See step 29 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FLOOR CARPET COVER CENTER RH (See step 30 in REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER CENTER (See step 31 in REPLACEMENT )
- SEPARATE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY
- Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable end from the shift lever assy.
- Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assy counterclockwise and remove the stopper cap.
- Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the shift lever assy.
- REMOVE SHIFT LEVER ASSY
- Disconnect the pattern select switch connector, the shift rock control computer connector and the indicator lamp wire connector.
- Remove the 4 nuts and disconnect the shift lever assy from the vehicle.
- REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
- Using a screwdriver, remove the position indicator housing from the shift lever assy.
- REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON COVER
- Using a small screwdriver, remove the shift lock release button cover from the position indicator housing assy.
- REMOVE PATTERN SELECT SWITCH ASSY NO. 1
- Remove the pattern select switch assy No. 1 from the position indicator housing.
- REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE LINK NO. 1
- Remove the shift lock release link, spring and cover from the position indicator housing.
- REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR LIGHT GUIDE
- Remove the indicator lamp wire sub-assy from the shift lever assy.
- Using a small screwdriver, remove the position indicator light guide from the shift lever assy.
- REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
- Remove the position indicator slide cover from the position indicator housing lower.
- REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
- Remove the position indicator slide cover No. 2 from the position indicator slide cover.
- REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING LOWER
- Remove the position indicator housing lower from the shift lock control unit.
- REMOVE INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSY
- Gate shift lever:
- Remove the connector from the shift lever assy.
- Shift lever with multi-mode automatic transmission:
- Remove the connector from the shift lever assy.
- Using a screwdriver, release the stopper of the connector.
- Using a small screwdriver, disengage the locking lug of terminals (1) and (6), and pull the terminals out from the rear.
- Gate shift lever:
- INSTALL INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSY
- Shift lever with multi-mode automatic transmission:
- Connect the 2 terminals of indicator lamp wire harness to the connector of transmission control switch.
- Install the connector to the shift lever assy.
- Gate shift lever:
- Install the connector to the shift lever assy.
- Shift lever with multi-mode automatic transmission:
- INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING LOWER
- Install the position indicator housing lower to the shift lock control unit.
HINT:
Engage the claws securely.
- Install the position indicator housing lower to the shift lock control unit.
- INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
- Install the position indicator slide cover No. 2 to the position indicator slide cover.
- INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
- Install the position indicator slide cover to the position indicator housing lower.NOTE: Install the position indicator slide cover No. 2 with the boss facing the rear of the vehicle.
- Install the position indicator slide cover to the position indicator housing lower.
- INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR LIGHT GUIDE
- Install the position indicator light guide to the position indicator housing lower.
HINT:
Engage the claws securely.
- Install the indicator lamp wire sub-assy to the shift lever assy.
- Install the position indicator light guide to the position indicator housing lower.
- INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE LINK NO. 1
- Apply MP grease to the shift lock release link and spring.
- Install the shift lock release link, spring and cover.
- INSTALL PATTERN SELECT SWITCH ASSY NO. 1
- Install the pattern select switch assy No. 1 to the position indicator housing.
- INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON COVER
- Install the shift lock release button cover to the position indicator housing.
- INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
- Install the position indicator housing to the shift lever assy.
HINT:
Engage the claws securely.
- Install the position indicator housing to the shift lever assy.
- INSTALL SHIFT LEVER ASSY
- Install the floor shift assy with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf)
HINT:
Tighten them in the order, A, B, C and D.
NOTE: Be careful not to put the wirings of the indicator lamp or the shift lock system between the floor shift assy and the floor while installing the floor shift assy. - Install the pattern select switch connector, the shift lock control computer connector and the indicator lamp wire connector.
- Install the floor shift assy with the 4 nuts.
- CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY
- Connect the socket of the transmission control cable assembly to the shift lever assy.
- Connect the control cable end to the shift lever assy.
- Push the stopper cap to the socket as shown in the illustration.
- Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assy clockwise and install the stopper cap.NOTE:
- To prevent torsion of the inner cable, the end with the eye should face up.
- Push the cable end to the bottom of the pin.
- Confirm that the connection between the socket and the shift rock control unit is fixed.
- INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSY
- Install the shift lever knob sub-assy.
- INSTALL BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
- INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION (See ADJUSTMENT )
- ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
- Loosen the nut on the control shaft lever.
- Push the control shaft fully downward.
- Return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position.
- While pushing the control cable end up with the shift lever in the N position, install it to the control shaft lever with the nut.
Torque: 15 N.m (150 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf)
NOTE:- If the control cable end is excessively pushed up, the shift lever can not be adjusted.
- When tightening the nut, confirm that the control cable is properly stretched.
- Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting the lever from the N to D position and moves rearward when shifting it to the R position.
