Upper Timing Chain - Remove For Access (G2781727): Removal
- If the vehicle has been powered down, do not power up the vehicle until all the bonding points have been tested.
- It is the responsibility of the Electric Vehicle Senior Authorized Person (EVSAP) to make sure they comply with any local legislation for work on High Voltage (HV).
- The approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn where indicated within this procedure and not removed unless indicated within a step. All items of PPE must be checked for signs of damage before each use, if damaged, replacement PPE must be obtained before doing this procedure.
- All Permit To Work (PTW) documents must be kept for a minimum of 5 years.
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

This procedure involves work on components associated with the HV system. Only technicians qualified to EVCP level or higher are allowed to do this procedure. It is mandated that all technicians involved with the steps in this procedure have read and understood the Electric Vehicle (EV) Safety Rules.

Power Down the HV system. Only technicians qualified to Electric Vehicle Authorized Person (EVAP) level are allowed to perform this procedure. It is mandated that all technicians involved with the steps in this procedure have read and understood the EV Safety Rules.

- Disconnect the 12 V system.
Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
- Remove the charge air cooler.
Refer to: CHARGE AIR COOLER .
- Remove the upper timing cover.
Refer to: UPPER TIMING COVER .
- Release the 2 hose connections.
- Release the hose clip.
- Release the hose clamp.
- Release the hose clip.
- Remove the hose.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Release the hose clamp.
- Remove the hose.
- Release the charge air cooler intake pipe retaining clip.
- Remove the charge air cooler intake pipe.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1656 as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1656
- Use the special tool JLR-303-1656 to rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks align as illustrated.
- Install the special tool JLR-303-1656 as illustrated.
Install the special tool as illustrated and tighten the 2 bolts.
Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1636
Torque : 13 Nm
- Install the special tool as illustrated and tighten the 2 bolts.
Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1636
Torque : 13 Nm
The following step(s) applies to:
Non plug in hybrid electric vehicles only
- Install the special tool as illustrated and tighten the 2 bolts.

CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.NOTE:
- The engine may require rotating to the correct position before the special tool can be installed.
- The 4 locating pegs of the special tool must be installed correctly into the crankshaft pulley.
- Install special tool JLR-303-1630 to the crankshaft pulley.
Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1630
- Install and hand-tighten the 2 special tool bolts.
The following step(s) applies to:
Plug in hybrid electric vehicles only
Install the special tool JLR-303-1686 adapter to the special tool JLR-303-1630 crankshaft pulley locking tool.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1630 , JLR-303-1686

CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.NOTE:
- The engine may require rotating to the correct position before the special tool can be installed.
- The 4 locating pegs of the special tool must be installed correctly into the crankshaft pulley.
- Install the special tools JLR-303-1630 and JLR-303-1686 to the crankshaft pulley.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1630 , JLR-303-1686
- Install and hand-tighten the 2 special tool bolts.
The following step(s) applies to:

- Loosen but do not fully remove the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) bolts.
- Remove and discard the upper timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the 2 special tool bolts.
- Remove the special tool JLR-303-1636.

CAUTION: Note the location of the VCT units prior to removal. Each VCT unit is matched to a specific camshaft.
- Remove and discard the 2 VCT unit center bolts.
- Remove the 2 VCT units.
- Remove and discard the 2 bolts.
- Remove and discard the upper timing chain guide.
- Remove and discard the bolt.
- Remove and discard the left timing chain guide.
- Remove and discard the timing chain tensioner guide.
- Release the timing chain from the idler sprocket and remove.
