Pinpoint Test M: Unintentional Operation Of The Hands-Free Tailgate

  1. M1: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Check the vehicle specification for hands-free tailgate system.

Is the vehicle installed with hands-free tailgate system?

      Yes:  GO to  M2.

No:  GO to PINPOINT TEST C .

  2. M2: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
NOTE: Unintentional opening: In exceptional circumstances, and if the smart key is within a 1.2 m radius of the tailgate, the powered tailgate may open unintentionally due to the following: Car washing or high pressure cleaning, moving objects beneath the rear bumper sensors, while changing a rear road wheel, while fitting snow chains to the rear wheels.
    1. Confirm with the customer/user that during unintentional operation the indicators flashed and if the tailgate was in an open state the latch release motor was heard.
    2. Make sure that during the unintentional operation none of the above instances occurred.

Does the customer/user experience of unintentional tailgate operation meet the gesture related criteria (indicator flash/latch release)?

      Yes:  GO to  M3.

No:  GO to PINPOINT TEST C .

  3. M3: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. If possible review the events of the unintentional operation with the customer and attempt to recreate the event.

Was it possible to recreate the event?

Yes:  If the event was related to a walk by event (including animals) GO to  M5. If the event was related to water ingress (rain, power wash) GO to  M6. If the event was related to filling the vehicle with fuel or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) (AdBlue®) GO to  M7. If the event was related to loading or unloading from the tailgate area of the vehicle GO to  M9.

      No:  GO to  M4.

  4. M4: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Refer to the relevant service information and remove the rear bumper Refer to: REAR BUMPER . check the condition of the hands-free tailgate sensors

Are the hands-free tailgate sensors clean and free of mud, dirt and debris?

      Yes:  GO to  M5.

No:  Clean the mud, dirt, debris from the hands-free tailgate sensors, refit the bumper and retest the system.

  5. M5: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Check the installation of the hands-free tailgate sensors to the carrier brackets and the bumper.

Are the hands-free tailgate sensors installed correctly to the vehicle and all connections made? Is the sensor orientation correct and the wiring harness correctly installed and secure?

      Yes:  GO to  M6.

No:  Refer to the relevant service information and refit the rear bumper Refer to: REAR BUMPER . and retest the system.

  6. M6: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. With the bumper removed inspect the hands-free tailgate sensor areas for any signs of water ingress that runs directly over the sensors. If there is evidence of water ingress, complete a water test around the sensor with light water pressure only (replicating natural rain fall)

Is there any evidence of water ingress that runs directly over the hands-free tailgate sensors? Did water run over the sensors during the water test?

Yes:  Rectify the water leak and retest the system. If all components are correctly installed and water is still leaking, contact Jaguar Land Rover Technical Assistance with all of the above findings and information.

      No:  GO to  M7.

  7. M7: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Check the condition and installation of fuel/DEF  drain pipe or any other lines in the vicinity of the hands-free tailgate sensors.

Are the lines secured into the correct positions?

      Yes:  GO to  M9.

No:  Refit or replace the pipes/lines as necessary and retest the system.

    1. Check the installation of the exhaust heat shields in the area of the gesture sensors.

Are the heat shields securely attached, correct to original form and all fixings/earthing clips in place?

      Yes:  GO to  M9.

No:  Refit the heat shields and make sure all fixings and earth clips are secure. Refit the bumper and retest the system.

  9. M9: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check between the affected hands-free tailgate module and any splice joints for ground, power and LIN  circuits.

Were any obvious issues found with any of the splice joints?

Yes:  Repair the wiring harness as necessary and retest the system.

      No:  GO to  M10.

  10. M10: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the hands-free tailgate module(s) ground and power circuits for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance.

Were any faults found with the electrical circuit?

Yes:  Repair the wiring harness as necessary and retest the system.

      No:  GO to  M11.

  11. M11: UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION OF THE HANDS-FREE TAILGATE
    1. Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the LIN  circuit from the splice joint to the RFA  for short to ground, open circuit, high resistance.

Were any faults found with the LIN  circuit?

Yes:  Repair the wiring harness as necessary and retest the system.

No:  Contact Jaguar Land Rover Technical Assistance with all of the above findings and information.
