Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain And Refill (G2203278): Check

WARNING:
  • Observe due care when draining, as the fluid can be very hot.
  • Observe due care when working near a hot exhaust system.
    • The following steps must be observed before starting the automatic transmission fluid drain.
    • The vehicle must be on a horizontal ramp.
    • Make sure that the Electric Park Brake (EPB) is applied.
    • Make sure the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is in the Park (P) position.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.

    • Remove the 10 bolts.
    • Remove the transmission undershield.

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the heatshield.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. CAUTION: Make sure that the transmission is not in default (service) mode. If this is the case, stop and correct the cause first and then perform the fluid level check procedure.
    • Connect Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment to the vehicle.
    • Start the engine and allow it to idle.
    • Switch off the Air Conditioning (A/C) system and other electrical components.
  7. CAUTION: Using Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, make sure the transmission temperature is between 30°C (85°F) and 50°C (122°F) before draining the transmission fluid.
    • Apply and hold the brake pedal.
    • Select Reverse (R) gear and wait for 10 seconds.
    • Select Drive (D), then manual 1st gear and wait for 10 seconds.
    • Select 2nd gear and wait for 10 seconds.
    • Select Park (P) position on the TCS  .
  8. Raise the engine speed to 2000 rpm and hold for 30 seconds. Then let it return to idle speed.
    • Using Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the transmission fluid temperature.
    • If the transmission fluid temperature is lower than 30°C (86°F). Allow the transmission to warm up above 30°C (86°F) with the engine idling in the P position, then proceed with the transmission fluid drain.
    • If the transmission fluid temperature is above 50°C (122°F), switch off the engine and allow the transmission to cool down, then repeat steps  7 and  8.
  10. Switch the engine off.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle.
  12. CAUTION: Only continue with the transmission fluid drain and refill procedure if the transmission temperature is between 30°C (86°C) and 50°C (122°).
    NOTE: Use a suitable container to collect escaping fluid.

    • Remove the fluid filler plug, do not discard.

      Special Tool(s): 307-452

    • Remove and discard the transmission fluid drain plug.
    • Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the container.
  14. CAUTION: Install a new transmission fluid drain plug.

    • Install and tighten the transmission fluid drain plug.

      Renew Part: Transmission fluid drain plug  Quantity: 1  .

      Torque  : 8 Nm

    • Fill the transmission with the recommended automatic transmission fluid until fluid flows out of the fluid filler hole. Refer to fluid specifications.

      Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS

    • Allow the transmission fluid to drain from the fluid filler hole until the flow stops.
    • Install the fluid filler plug, but only finger tight it at this stage.
    • Remove the container under the vehicle to avoid damage.
  17. Repeat steps  5 through  11, but exclude step 10 and leave engine running at idle for proper transmission fluid level reading.
  18. WARNING: This step is only required for 3.0L PETROL and 3.0L DIESEL vehicles

    Use a suitable tool to drain 350ml of transmission fluid from the automatic transmission filler hole.

  19. CAUTION: The engine needs to idle with the TCS  in the Park (P) position for correct transmission fluid level reading.

    • Remove the fluid filler plug, do not discard it.

      Special Tool(s): 307-452 

    • If fluid flows out of the filler hole, wait until the flow stops than proceed to step  19.
    • If fluid does not flow out of the filler hole, proceed to step  15.
  20. NOTE: Install the original fluid filler plug.

    • Using the special tool, install the original fluid filler plug.
    • Special Tool(s): 307-452 
  21. CAUTION: Make sure the transmission fluid filler plug is tightened to the correct specification. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the transmission.

    • To make sure the transmission fluid filler plug is tightened to the correct specification, use the special tool and a torque wrench and follow the steps below:
    • Step 1. Multiply 35 Nm by the effective length of the torque wrench (1).
    • Step 2. Add the effective length of the special tool (2) to the effective length of the torque wrench (1).
    • Step 3. Divide the total of step 1 by the total of step 2.
    • Step 4. Set the torque wrench to the figure arrived at in step 3.
    • Tighten the transmission fluid filler plug to the torque given by the calculation.
    • Remove the special tool.

      Special Tool(s): 307-452 

  23. Clean the area around the fluid filler plug, wipe away any excess fluid and remove the container.

    • Install the heatshield.
    • Install and tighten the 2 bolts.

      Torque  : 9 Nm

    • Install the transmission undershield.
    • Install and tighten the 10 bolts.

      Torque 

      M10: 60 Nm 

      M6: 10 Nm 

  26. Lower the vehicle.
  27. Disconnect the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment.
