Left Cylinder Head (G1085322): Removal

CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING

  3. Drain the cooling system.

    Refer to the appropriate Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding service information .

  4. Remove the left side Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve.

    Refer to: LEFT EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE

  5. Remove the left side exhaust manifold.

    Refer to: LEFT EXHAUST MANIFOLD 

  6. Remove and discard the oil filter element.

    Refer to: OIL FILTER ELEMENT 

  7. Remove the crankcase vent oil separator.

    Refer to: CRANKCASE VENT OIL SEPARATOR

  8. Remove the left side camshafts.

    Refer to: LEFT CAMSHAFT 

  9. NOTE: Note the position of the components prior to removal.

    Remove the valve rocker arms and hydraulic adjusters.

  10. NOTE: Discard the seals.

    Remove the coolant outlet manifold.

  11. Remove the wiring harness support bracket.

  12. Remove the fuel pump bracket.

  13. Remove the glow plug wiring harness.

  14. Remove the left side glow plugs.

  15. CAUTION: Discard the bolts.

    Remove the cylinder head and cylinder head gasket.

  16. Note the number of cutouts on the old cylinder head gasket. Make sure the correct new cylinder head gasket is installed.

  17. Using a plastic scraper, clean the cylinder head and block mating faces.
  18. NOTE:
    • If the cylinder head face distortion is within tolerance and can be reused. Do not disassemble further.
    • If the cylinder head face distortion is not within tolerance or a new cylinder head is required. Continue with this procedure.

    Check the cylinder head for distortion.

  19. Remove and discard the camshaft position sensor.

  20. Remove the oil temperature sensor.

  21. Remove the engine coolant temperature sensor.

  22. Remove the bracket from the front of the cylinder head.

  23. Remove the bracket from the rear of the cylinder head.
