The cylinder heads are unique to each cylinder bank.
To reduce distortion and secure each cylinder head to the cylinder block, 8 cylinder head bolts are used in each cylinder head. The cylinder head bolts are located beneath the camshafts, 4 under the intake camshaft and 4 under the exhaust camshaft. Each cylinder head has 2 hollow dowels to align the cylinder head with the cylinder block.
The cylinder head gasket is available in 5 different thicknesses to be used dependent on the maximum piston protrusion. Gasket thickness is identified by serrations cut into the front end of the gasket.
For additional information, Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS
The cylinder heads include 2 exhaust ports and 2 intake ports for each cylinder.
Each of the 2 intake ports has a specific design. They include 1 helical shaped port that functions as a swirl port, and a lateral port which functions as a charge port. This design causes turbulence in the cylinder which increases fuel efficiency.
The camshafts are a hollow pipe construction, with pressed on lobes. Each camshaft is located with camshaft caps, 5 for the exhaust camshafts and 4 for the intake camshafts. Markings on each camshaft cap identify their positions.
Both exhaust camshafts are used to provide drive for other essential components.
The bank 1 exhaust camshaft provides a direct drive for the brake vacuum pump. A belt arrangement on the rear of bank 2 exhaust camshaft provides drive for the High Pressure (HP) fuel pump.
For additional information, refer to: FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS
The exhaust camshaft gear of the bank 2 cylinder head incorporates a reluctor ring used by the Camshaft Position sensor (CMP) to determine camshaft position.
