Left Cylinder Head (G2128210): Removal

CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.

NOTE:

This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT
Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: LIFTING
Remove the left exhaust manifold.
Refer to: LEFT EXHAUST MANIFOLD
Remove the left camshaft.
Refer to: LEFT CAMSHAFT

Remove the knock sensor.

Release the wiring harness.
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

NOTE: Clamp the hose to minimize coolant loss.

- Disconnect the 2 heater feed coolant hoses.
- Disconnect the coolant temperature electrical connector and release the 2 clips.
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

Remove the engine coolant outlet. Discard the O-ring seals.

Release the fuel line.

Remove the oil evacuation pipe. Discard the O-ring seal.
CAUTION:
- If a new cylinder head has been installed then new tappets must be installed.
- If the cylinder head is being removed without a new component being installed, the tappets must be installed in their original positions.

Remove the 12 tappets.

Remove and discard the 2 cylinder head bolts.

Remove and discard the 3 cylinder head bolts.

Use the special tool to remove the cylinder head bolts.

Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1653

Using the special tool remove and discard the 8 cylinder head bolts.

Special Tool(s): 303-1492
Remove the special tools.

Remove the cylinder head. Discard the gasket.
