Fuel Tank (G2132467): Removal

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles

CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Before working on the fuel system make sure to study the fuel system health and safety article of this repair information.

    Refer to: PETROL AND PETROL-ETHANOL FUEL SYSTEMS HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

    Refer to: DIESEL FUEL SYSTEM HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  2. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  3. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING

  4. Remove the fuel pump and sensor unit.

    Refer to: LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY

    Disconnect the breather from the fuel tank.

  6. Remove the driveshaft.

    Refer to: DRIVESHAFT

    • Remove the 21 fasteners.
    • Remove the 12 bolts and the left side undershield.
    • Remove the 12 bolts and the right side undershield.
  8. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.

    • Release the clamp.
    • Disconnect the fuel filler hose.
    • Position the fuel filler hose away from the fuel tank.

    Remove the 5 nuts and the fuel tank shield.

  10. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.

    Disconnect the 2 fuel lines.

The following step(s) applies to: 

Vehicles with fuel fired heater

  1. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.

    Disconnect the 2 Fuel Fired Booster Heater (FFBH) fuel delivery lines.

  2. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.

    • Disconnect the FFBH fuel return line.
    • Release the clip.

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles

  1. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the 2 nuts and the 2 fuel tank shields.

    • Using a suitable stand, support the fuel tank.
    • Remove the 4 nuts and the 2 fuel tank mounting brackets.
  3. CAUTION: Care must be taken to avoid damaging the surrounding components.

    Lower the fuel tank on the suitable stand and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.

    Remove the 2 fuel supply pipes from the 4 clips.

The following step(s) applies to: 

Vehicles with fuel fired heater

    Remove the 3 fuel pipes from the 5 clips.
