Thermostat (G1947497): Removal

CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

NOTE:

This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

Disconnect the 12 V system.
Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

Remove the engine cover.
Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: LIFTING
Drain the coolant system.
Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING
NOTE: If equipped.

Remove the High Pressure (HP) Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler.

Refer to: HIGH PRESSURE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION COOLER
NOTE:
- If equipped.
- Remove and discard the gasket.
- Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

Remove the EGR pipe.
NOTE: If equipped.

Remove the coolant hose between the EGR assembly and the thermostat.
NOTE: If equipped.

Release the upper thermostat hose and reposition away from the thermostat assembly.

Release the coolant hose between the radiator and the thermostat and reposition away from the thermostat assembly.

Release the lower thermostat coolant hose and reposition away from the thermostat.

Release the thermostat bypass coolant hose from the coolant pump connecting pipe.

Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors on the thermostat.

Remove the thermostat assembly.

Remove the thermostat bypass hose.
