Camshafts (G1817149): Removal

NOTE:

  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. Remove the fuel rail.

    Refer to: FUEL RAIL

  3. Remove the fuel injectors.

    Refer to: FUEL INJECTORS

  4. Remove the upper timing chain.

    Refer to: UPPER TIMING COVER

  5. CAUTION: Use 2 suitable M6 X 20 bolts to install the special tool to the cylinder head.

    Install the special tool.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1631

    • Loosen the camshaft gear bolt but do not remove at this stage.
    • Remove the special tool.
  7. Remove the camshaft gear and discard the bolt.

    Remove the special tool.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1625 

  9. Remove the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) material.

  10. Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors and position the harness to one side.

  11. Remove the cylinder head temperature sensor electrical connector bracket.

  12. Position the crankcase breather to one side.

  13. Remove the valve cover and discard the gasket.

  14. NOTE: Note the orientation of the component prior to removal

    • Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
    • Remove the camshafts.
    • Inspect the components and renew if damaged or worn.
