Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover, 2017 Land Rover Range Rover, 2016 Land Rover Range Rover, 2014 Land Rover Range Rover, and 2013 Land Rover Range Rover. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) allows the PCM to determine the position and angular rate of change of the throttle butterfly valve.
There are two TPS located in the electric throttle. See below for details of the electric throttle.
If a TPS fails, the PCM:
- Adopts a limp home mode where engine speed is limited to a maximum of approximately 2000 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)
- Discontinues evaporative emissions control
- Discontinues closed loop control of engine idle speed.
With a failed TPS, the engine will suffer from poor running and throttle response.
