Engine Assembly: Removal

CAUTION:

If the original engine has experienced a catastrophic failure or an individual failure with the piston, cylinder bore, engine block, valve or valve seat, the intake manifold MUST be replaced with a new manifold.

  1. Drain the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL CHANGE .
  2. Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the transmission inspection and structural dust covers. Refer to COVER, STRUCTURAL DUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    1 - Flexplate to Torque Converter Bolt
  4. Remove the flexplate to torque converter bolts.

    1 - Oil Pan to Transmission Bolts
  5. Remove both the left and right side oil pan to transmission bolts.
  6. Remove the body. Refer to BODY, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  7. Remove the front bumper reinforcement. Refer to REINFORCEMENT, BUMPER, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  8. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  9. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Disconnect the oil cooler coolant hose from the left side of oil cooler.

    1 - Transmission Heater Hose to Lower Radiator Hose
    2 - Transmission Heater Hose to Thermostat Housing
  11. Disconnect the transmission heater hoses from the thermostat housing, lower radiator hose, and right side engine mount.
  12. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

  13. Disconnect the heater hoses from the water pump and the right side cylinder head cover.

  14. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump and engine oil cooler and remove the coolant hose assembly.
  15. Detach the degasser hose retainer from right side wire harness on cylinder head cover.

  16. Disconnect the coolant hose.
  17. Remove the oil cooler coolant tube nut and the oil cooler coolant tube.
  18. Disconnect the left upstream Oxygen (O2) sensor wire harness connector and detach wire harness retainer.
  19. Disconnect the left downstream O2 sensor wire harness connector.

  20. Remove the fuel line/fuel vapor line bracket M10 nut and position aside the fuel line/fuel vapor line bracket.

  21. Remove the fuel line/fuel vapor line to the transmission heat exchanger M8 nut and position aside the fuel line/fuel vapor line bracket.
  22. Detach the fuel and vapor line retainers (left side).

  23. Remove the vapor hose retainer from the rear of the left of the cylinder head cover and reposition the hose and fuel lines.
  24. Detach the transmission vent tube retainer from wire harness.

  25. Remove the left front heat shield nuts, left front heat shield bolt, and the left front heat shield.

    1 - Catalytic Converter to Manifold Bolts
  26. Saturate all exhaust bolts and nuts with Mopar® Rust Penetrant. Allow 5 minutes for penetration.
  27. Remove the left catalytic converter to manifold bolts.

  28. Disconnect the transfer case shift motor wire harness connector.

  29. Detach the transfer case motor wire harness retainers and position aside.

  30. Disconnect the transfer case position sensor wire harness connector.

  31. Turn the locking mechanism of the transmission wire harness connector counter-clockwise to release the lock and disconnect the transmission wire harness connector.
  32. Detach the retainer and disconnect the right downstream O2 wire harness connector.
  33. Detach the right upstream O2 wire harness retainers.
  34. Remove cover and disconnect the right upstream O2 wire harness connector.
  35. Detach the right downstream O2 wire harness retainers.

  36. Remove the transmission coolant line bolts.
  37. Detach the transmission wire harness retainers and position aside the transmission wire harness.

  38. Remove the ground strap studbolt from the front of the right cylinder head.

    1 - Catalytic Converter to Manifold Bolts
  39. Remove the right catalytic converter to exhaust manifold bolts and disconnect the catalytic converter assembly at the exhaust manifolds.
  40. Remove the exhaust isolator bolts attaching it to the crossmember.
  41. Remove the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid (VVTS). Refer to SOLENOID, VALVE TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    Do not use air tools to install the (special tool #8984C, Fixture, Engine Lifting) and (special tool #2013800091, Adapter, Engine Lifting Bracket).

  42. Install the engine lift fixture and adapter.
  43. Detach the Manual Park Release (MPR) cable from left engine mount.
  44. Continue to step 45  for 2WD models, for 4WD models, proceed to step 49  .

  45. Remove the left side engine mount heat shield nut.

  47. Loosen the nut from the left side engine mount through bolts.

  50. Remove the engine mount bracket to pinion housing retaining bolts.
  51. Remove the engine mount bracket to transmission retaining bolts.

  52. Remove the left engine mount bracket to engine mount isolator through bolt.
  53. Loosen the engine bracket to engine mount isolator guide bolt.

  54. Remove the right side engine mount heat shield nut.

  55. Remove the right engine mount bracket to engine mount isolator through bolt.
  56. Loosen the engine bracket to engine mount isolator guide bolt.

  57. The upper guide bolts are left in place to support engine, the brackets are slotted to allow engine removal.
  58. Setup and install the engine lift.
  59. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.

    NOTE:

    Stud bolt gets removed in step 69.

  60. Remove the transmission bell housing to engine block bolts.
  61. Position a suitable jack under the front axle.
  62. Raise the engine.

  63. Remove the front transmission cooler lines nut.
  64. Remove the transmission cooler line retainer from the studbolt on the oil pan.

  65. Remove the rear transmission cooler lines bolt and position aside transmission cooler lines.

  66. Remove the battery ground cable bolt and position aside the battery ground cable (left side).
  67. Detach the two battery wire harness retainers from the left cylinder head cover.
  68. Detach the wire harness retainers along the left side of oil pan.
  69. Remove the last transmission bell housing to engine block stud bolt.
  70. Separate the engine from the transmission and remove the engine from the vehicle.
  71. If replacing the engine, transfer necessary parts as required to the replacement engine.
