Camshaft, Engine: Installation

CAUTION:

Attempting to remove or install the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) without special tool 10259 A/B will result in damage to the VVAA, valves or cylinder head.

Verify that special tool 10259A (1) remained flush with the VVAA and the spring compressors (2) stayed in the compressed position during the camshaft removal process. Adjust as necessary to prevent the VVAA rocker arms from contacting the camshaft while setting the camshaft into position.

NOTE:
The No. 1 (front) and No. 6 (rear) bearing caps are not marked, as they are unique. The middle caps are marked E1 through E4, starting from the front of the engine. The markings on the caps will be upside down when viewed from the exhaust side of engine.

NOTE:
As each camshaft bearing cap is installed, visually verify that the camshaft has some endplay.
Using clean engine oil, lubricate the 6 camshaft bearing saddles prior to installing the camshaft.
Carefully set the camshaft into position with the sprocket dowel pin straight up.
Using clean engine oil, lubricate the 6 camshaft bearing journals prior to installing the cam caps.
Apply a seam of Anaerobic Loctite® 518 Sealant on the contact area of the rear camshaft cap.
Install each camshaft bearing cap and bolts finger tight.
NOTE:
As each camshaft bearing cap is installed, visually verify that the camshaft has some end play.

Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in illustration to the following specifications:
- All bolts except 9 and 10 to 15 N.m (11 Ft. Lbs.).
- Bolts 9 and 10 to 30 N.m (22 Ft. Lbs.).

Loosen the compressor assemblies (2) (clockwise rotation) and remove the special tool (1) from the VVAA.
Install the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG, INSTALLATION .
Install the camshaft sprocket, engine timing chain cover and cylinder head cover. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, INSTALLATION .
Install the vacuum pump. Refer to PUMP, VACUUM, INSTALLATION .
If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level. Refer to ENGINE OIL, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.

NOTE:

The Cam/Crank Variation Relearn procedure must be performed using the scan tool anytime there has been a repair/replacement made to a powertrain system, for example: flywheel, valvetrain, camshaft and/or crankshaft sensors or components.
