Pump, Vacuum: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
CAUTION:

When servicing components near the vacuum pump, avoid contact with the plastic nipple/connector fitting that connects the vacuum pump to the brake booster hose. It is possible to crack the plastic nipple resulting in a brake booster vacuum leak.

NOTE:

The vacuum connector fitting is serviceable by itself. If the connector fitting is damaged, it must be replaced.

NOTE:

The connector fitting O-Ring seal must be replaced if the fitting is removed from the pump. Service fittings include a new O-Ring pre-installed.

NOTE:

The vacuum connector fitting is not serviceable by itself. If the connector fitting is damaged, the pump must be replaced.

NOTE:

The vacuum pump connector fitting O-Ring seal (1) must be replaced if the fitting is removed from the pump. Service fittings include a new O-Ring pre-installed.

  1. If removed, lightly lubricate a new O-ring seal (1) with clean engine oil and install new O-ring on the vacuum fitting.

  2. Install the vacuum fitting (1) with the screw (2) tightened to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  3. Install new vacuum pump O-ring seals (1, 2).

  4. Clean the vacuum pump sealing surfaces with isopropyl alcohol in preparation for sealant application.
    CAUTION:

    Engine assembly requires the use of a unique sealant that is compatible with engine oil. Using a sealant other than Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive may result in engine fluid leakage.

    CAUTION:

    Following the application of Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive to the gasket surfaces, the components must be assembled within 10 minutes and the attaching fasteners must be tightened to specification within the next 10 minutes. Prolonged exposure to the air prior to assembly may result in engine fluid leakage.

  5. Apply a 2 to 3 mm wide bead of Mopar® Engine Sealant RTV Silicone Rubber Adhesive to the vacuum pump sealing surface at the rear exhaust camshaft bearing cap/cylinder head T-joint (1).

  6. Align the pump drive tab with the pump drive slot located on the cam shaft and install the vacuum pump (1) into the cylinder head opening with the bolts (2) tightened to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  7. Install the coolant tube (3) to the cylinder head cover stud bolt and tighten the engine cover ball stud (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  8. Connect the vacuum hose quick-connect fitting (1) to the vacuum pump (2).
  9. Install the engine cover. Refer to COVER, ENGINE, INSTALLATION .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.
  11. Run the engine and check the vacuum pump for proper operation.
