Assembly, Variable Valve Timing, Phaser / Oil Control Valve: Removal

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL .

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front) to align the timing cover mark (1) with the damper notch (2) to place the number one cylinder piston at top-dead-center (TDC) on the exhaust stroke.

Using a paint pen or equivalent, mark both camshaft sprocket timing marks (2 and 3) and corresponding chain links (1) to aid in reassembly.

Remove the bolt (1) and cam chain guide (2).

NOTE:

NOTE:
The (special tool #2035300090, Holder, Chain Tensioner) is used to compress the cam chain tensioner and provide the chain slack necessary to remove the phasers from the camshafts. The wedge (3) portion of the tool fits between the moving tensioner (5) and a timing cover mounting boss (4) to apply pressure to the tensioner piston. The retainer bracket tension bolt (2) assures the wedge (3) remains in place during the procedure. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the retainer bracket tension bolt (2).

NOTE:
DO NOT remove the chain tensioner holder until the phasers and oil control valves have been reinstalled on the camshafts. If the tensioner piston is allowed to extend, it can not be reset without removing the timing cover.

Insert the (special tool #2035300090, Holder, Chain Tensioner) (1).

Use a driver (1) to press down the chain tensioner holder and verify that it is secured and not coming out.
NOTE:
Do not use a hammer to install the chain tensioner holder. Hand installation only.

Install the chain tensioner holder retainer bracket to the timing cover with a 6 mm x 20 mm bolt (1) tightened to 10 N.m (89 In. Lbs.).
Using an Allen key (2), rotate the retainer bracket tension bolt down until it just touches the top of the holder. DO NOT apply any additional torque to the retainer bracket tension bolt.
NOTE:
DO NOT remove the chain tensioner holder until the phasers and oil control valves have been reinstalled on the camshafts. If the tensioner piston is allowed to extend, it can not be reset without removing the timing cover.

Hold the intake camshaft with a 42 mm wrench or equivalent (1) and loosen but do not remove, the intake oil control valve (2).
