Assembly, Variable Valve Timing, Phaser / Oil Control Valve: Installation

  1. Route the timing chain (2) around the intake cam phaser (3) so that the paint mark is aligned with the phaser timing mark. Use the (special tool #2050800090, Wrench, Camshaft Holding) (1) to align the notch in the camshaft (4) with the key on the phaser and press the intake cam phaser onto the intake camshaft. Install and hand tighten the oil control valve.

  2. While maintaining this alignment, route the timing chain (2) around the exhaust cam phaser (3) so that the paint mark is aligned with the phaser timing mark. Use the (special tool #2050800090, Wrench, Camshaft Holding) (1) to align the notch in the camshaft (4) with the key on the phaser and press the exhaust cam phaser onto the exhaust camshaft. Install and hand tighten the oil control valve.

  3. Hold the intake camshaft with a 42 mm wrench or equivalent (1) and tighten the intake oil control valve (2) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  4. Hold the exhaust camshaft with a 42 mm wrench or equivalent (1) and tighten the exhaust oil control valve (2) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  5. Using an Allen key (2), loosen the chain tensioner holder retainer bracket tension bolt. Remove the chain tensioner holder retainer bracket bolt (1) and remove the chain tensioner holder.

  6. Install the cam chain guide (2) and tighten the bolt (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise two complete revolutions and verify correct valve timing. Refer to VALVE TIMING VERIFICATION .
  8. If the valve timing is not correct, repeat this procedure.
  9. Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, INSTALLATION .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.
  11. Start the engine and perform the following Powertrain Verification Tests: Refer to 2.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
    • Cam/Crank Variation Relearn
    • Target Coefficient Relearn
NOTE:

Following the first restart after a DTC driven phaser replacement, clear all DTCs and verify that subsequent restarts do not set any additional codes for any DTCs that reset. Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
