Diagnostic Test
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any O2 Sensor, cylinder misfire, Crank Sensor, MAF Sensor, EGR, Fuel Pressure or Fuel Injector DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM

Were any fuel system problems found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repairs to the fuel system.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM
.
- CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR RESTRICTIONS
- Check the Intake Air System for any signs of a restriction.
Were any Intake Air System restrictions found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair to the Intake Air System.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Check the Intake Air System for any signs of a restriction.
- CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
- Perform the Engine Diagnosis and Testing INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION

Is there evidence of a leak?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair as indicated.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Perform the Engine Diagnosis and Testing INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION

- CHECK THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS
- Check the Exhaust System for any signs of a leak or restriction.
Were any Exhaust System problems found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repairs to the Exhaust System.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Check the Exhaust System for any signs of a leak or restriction.
- CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM FOR LEAKS AND PERFORM THE EGR ACTUATION TESTING PROCEDURE
- Look for visible signs (soot streaks) of an external EGR leak.
- With the scan tool, perform the EGR Actuation/Testing procedure.
Were any problems found with the EGR system?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repairs to the EGR system.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- INSTALL A NEW OXYGEN SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTC
- Turn the ignition off.
- Install a new Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, navigate to Actuator Tests and perform the O2 Sensor Replaced procedure.
- Start the engine.
- Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
- Monitor the scan tool for at least five minutes.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Test Complete.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
