Diagnostic Test
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 75.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
Are there any other Engine Hood Switch DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) and/or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
No
- Go To 3
- Refer to the recorded DTCs.
- CHECK THE HOOD, HOOD AJAR SWITCH AND LATCH ASSEMBLY FOR PROPER INSTALLATION
- Visually inspect that the Hood is secured properly. Also inspect the Hood Ajar Switch and Latch assembly for proper installation.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Visually inspect that the Hood is secured properly. Also inspect the Hood Ajar Switch and Latch assembly for proper installation.
- CHECK THE ENGINE HOOD SWITCH 2 FOR PROPER VOLTAGE
- CHECK THE ENGINE HOOD SWITCH 2 (K806) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the Engine Hood Switch 2 (K806) Signal circuit at the Engine Hood Switch 2 harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the Engine Hood Switch 2 (K806) Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the Engine Hood Switch 2 (K806) Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE ENGINE HOOD SWITCH 2
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the Engine Hood Switch 2.
- Depress and release the switch while measuring the resistance across the terminals of the Engine Hood Switch 2.NOTE:
The switch should have continuity when not depressed and be open when it is depressed.
Did the resistance read as described above?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Replace Engine Hood Switch 2.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE HOOD AJAR SWITCH VOLTAGE
- Disconnect the Hood Ajar Switch (Hood Latch) harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage on the Hood Ajar Switch (G70) Sense circuit at the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.
Is the voltage above 4.9 volts?
Yes
- Replace the Hood Ajar Switch (Hood Latch).
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 9
- CHECK THE HOOD AJAR SWITCH (G70) SENSE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the BCM A harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the Hood Ajar Switch (G70) Sense circuit at the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the Hood Ajar Switch (G70) Sense circuit?
Yes
- Repair the Hood Ajar Switch (G70) Sense circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- BODY CONTROL MODULE
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Hood Ajar Switch and the Body Control Module.
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
- Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 3.0L, POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Body Control Module in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
