Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM - 1.3L .
  4. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to SPARK PLUG, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Remove the turbocharger. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  7. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  8. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  9. Remove the water pump drive sprocket and timing chain. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  10. Remove the timing chain guides. Refer to GUIDES, TIMING CHAIN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  11. Remove the variable valve actuation assembly. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  12. Remove the tappets. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

  13. Loosen the band clamp (1) and remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
  14. Disconnect the wire harness connector (2) from the engine coolant heater.

  15. Remove the bolt (1) and remove the engine oil cooler coolant supply tube from the thermostat housing.

  16. Disconnect the fuel supply pipe quick coupling (1) from the high pressure fuel pump.

  17. Disconnect the wire harness connector (1) from the high pressure fuel pump.
  18. Disconnect the wire harness connector (2) from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.

  19. Loosen the band clamp (1) and remove the heater core supply hose.

  20. Disconnect the wire harness connector (1) from the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.

  21. Remove the bolts (1a) and remove the cylinder head assembly (1b). Discard the bolts, they can not be reused.
  22. Remove the cylinder head gasket.

INSTALLATION 

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket over the locating pins.
  2. Place the complete cylinder head in position on the locating pins.

  3. Install the (Special Tool No. 2031300091, Tool, Alignment Cylinder Head to Block) (1) on the timing cover mounting surface.

  4. Install and tighten the NEW  cylinder head bolts (1) following this 3 step torque plus angle method in the sequence shown. Tighten according to the following torque values:
    • Step 1: All to 30 N.m (22 ft. lbs.).
    • Step 2: All an additional 90° Turn Do not use a torque wrench for this step. 
    • Step 3: All an additional 90° Turn Do not use a torque wrench for this step. 
  5. Remove the (Special Tool No. 2031300091, Tool, Alignment Cylinder Head to Block).
  6. Connect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor wire harness connector.
  7. Install the heater core supply hose and tighten the band clamp.
  8. Connect the wire harness connector to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
  9. Connect the wire harness connector to the high pressure fuel pump.
  10. Connect the fuel supply pipe quick coupling to the high pressure fuel pump.
  11. Install the engine oil cooler coolant supply tube to the thermostat and tighten the bolt to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Connect the wire harness connector to the engine coolant heater.
  13. Install the upper radiator hose to the thermostat and tighten the band clamp.
  14. Install the tappets. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  15. Install the variable valve actuation assembly. Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  16. Install the timing chain guides. Refer to GUIDES, TIMING CHAIN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  17. Install the timing chain and water pump drive sprocket. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  18. Install the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  19. Install the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  20. Install the turbocharger. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  21. Install the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  22. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to SPARK PLUG, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  23. Fill the engine coolant system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM - 1.3L .
  24. If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
  25. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
  26. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
