  2. Unlock and disconnect the four Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) wire harness connectors (1).
  3. Unlock and disconnect the oil temperature sensor wire harness connector (2).
  4. Remove the rear bolts (3a) from the VVAA (3b).
  5. Assemble the 2020000090 Bracket, (Special Tool No. 2027207090, Tab, 90 Degree), and the (Special Tool No. 2020001090, Adapter, Multi Air Spring Compressor).

    CAUTION:

The coils of the springs must not be compressed and packed together, there must remain a gap between them to avoid exceeding the maximum permissible force.

  6. Position the tools (1) and tighten the screws to compress the springs on the VVAA.

  8. To avoid damage to the device housing, disconnection of the device from the piston and undesired disassembly of the hydraulic tappets while handling the UNIAIR module, do not position it with the hydraulic anchoring adjustment device (A) and clip for the hydraulic tappet rocker arm (B) in direct contact with the supporting surface. Moreover, never turn the UNIAIR module upside down with the hydraulic tappets facing upwards.

  9. Remove the VVAA metal gasket (1).
  10. If required, remove the locating dowels (2).
  11. If necessary, remove the multiair oil supply actuator filter. Refer to FILTER, MULTIAIR ACTUATOR OIL SUPPLY, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

INSTALLATION

NOTE:

If the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) module was replaced or removed and refitted, connect the diagnosis equipment to the EOBD socket and run the parameter learning using the "Reset adaptive VCM" routine in wiTEch.

  1. If removed, install the multiair oil supply actuator filter. Refer to FILTER, MULTIAIR ACTUATOR OIL SUPPLY, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

  2. Install a NEW  VVAA gasket (1a) on the cylinder head and the centering dowels (1b).
  3. Install two 2025300091 Guide Pins (2) in position as shown in illustration.

  4. Install the VVAA module (1) complete with the tool, using the guide pins (2) installed previously as a guide for the correct mating between the VVAA module pistons and the valves.
  5. Install and tighten the VVAA module bolts (3) 1 to 4 with a pre-torque of 15 N.m (11 ft. lbs.) to bring the module into contact with the cylinder head, then remove the pins. Install and tighten the bolts 5 to 15 with a pre-torque of 15 N.m (11 ft. lbs.) in a diagonal sequence.
  6. Using the tighten sequence shown, tighten the bolts (3) 1 to 15 to:
    • Stage 1 15 N.m (11 ft. lbs.).
    • Stage 2 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).

  7. Check that the VVAA module pistons (1) are mated correctly with the valves.
  8. Remove the 2020000090 Bracket, (Special Tool No. 2027207090, Tab, 90 Degree), and the (Special Tool No. 2020001090, Adapter, Multi Air Spring Compressor) tools.

Connect and lock the four VVAA wire harness connectors.

  9. Connect and lock the oil temperature sensor wire harness connector.

    NOTE:

Always refill the VVAA module with lubricant oil after fitting it on the engine in order to pass the test from cold the first time. Failure to fill the VVAA module with oil could result in operating problems.

  11. Refill the VVAA module lubrication circuit with the prescribed oil through the first valve (1), with a maximum pressure of 4 bar, taking care to avoid contact with the valve.
  12. Use the prescribed type SAE 0W-30 ACEA C2 / API SN in the VVAA module using a graduated syringe.
    NOTE:

The oil quantity for the first filling is 420 cm3 (40° C).

  13. Wait 60 minutes before starting the engine to ensure that the engine valves are closed.
  14. Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
