Fuel Rail
REMOVAL
The fuel system is under constant pressure even with engine off. Before servicing the fuel rail, fuel system pressure must be released.
- Perform the fuel system pressure release procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Remove the engine cover. Refer to
COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.
.CAUTION:
The left and right fuel rails are replaced as an assembly. Do not attempt to separate the fuel rail halves at the connector tube. Due to the design of the connector tube, it does not use any clamps. Never attempt to install a clamping device of any kind to the connector tube. When removing the fuel rail assembly for any reason, be careful not to bend or kink the connector tube.
- Disconnect the PCV hose and position aside.
- Disconnect the make up air hose and position aside.
- Disconnect the wire harness connectors at all eight fuel injectors.
1 - Fuel Line Quick Connection - Disconnect the fuel line quick connect fitting at the fuel rail. Refer to QUICK CONNECT FITTINGS
.
1 - Fuel Rail Mounting Bolts - Remove the four fuel rail mounting bolts.
1 - Fuel Rail - Remove the left and right fuel rails (with injectors attached) as an assembly from the engine.NOTE:
Remove one side at time by gently rocking and pulling up on the fuel injectors until they clear the holes in the intake manifold. Make sure the O-rings are still attached to the fuel injectors during removal.
- If new fuel injectors are being installed in the fuel rail. Refer to INJECTOR(S), FUEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
INSPECTION AND CLEANING
Cleaning
- Clean out the fuel injector machined holes in the intake manifold before installing the fuel rail and injectors.NOTE:
If the same fuel injectors are to be reinstalled, install
NEW
fuel injector O-rings.
INSTALLATION
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
During installation, torque the following fasteners to specification:
| Fuel Rail Bolts | 8 N.m (71 In. Lbs.) | - |
- Apply a small amount of engine oil to each fuel injector O-ring. This will help during fuel rail installation. Take care not to cut or roll the fuel injector O-rings.
- Using a side to side motion, gently rock the left fuel rail while pushing down until all four fuel injectors have completely seated into the machined holes of the intake manifold for each bank.
- When connecting the wire harness connectors, verify the fuel injector connector is locked to the injector by lightly tugging on the connector.
- Start the engine and check for leaks after procedure is complete.
