Removal And Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 RAM 3500 HD and 2019 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

REMOVAL 

WARNING:

Disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery (ground) cable. Wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

WARNING:

Review the warnings and cautions for this system before performing the procedure. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death.

NOTE:

The HVAC housing must be removed from the vehicle and disassembled for service of the A/C evaporator, air intake housing, mode-air and blend-air doors and the heater core.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
  2. Recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system. Refer to PLUMBING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  3. Drain the coolant. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  4. Remove the instrument panel and place it on a workbench. Refer to PANEL, INSTRUMENT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Remove front carpet. Refer to CARPET, FLOOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  6. Remove the two retainers (1) then remove the floor ducts from the two floor studs (2) and remove ducts from vehicle.

  7. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector (1) from the HVAC wire harness connector.

  8. Remove the nut (1) securing the A/C suction and liquid line assembly to the A/C expansion valve.

  9. Remove the four nuts (1) that secure the HVAC housing to the bulkhead.

  10. If equipped, remove the nut (2) securing the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) ground cable to the floor.
  11. Remove the bolt (1) securing the HVAC housing (3) to the floor and remove the HVAC housing from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION 

  1. Install the bolt that secure the HVAC housing to the floor and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. If equipped, install the nut (2) securing the PTC ground cable to the floor and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Install the four nuts that secure the HVAC housing to the bulkhead and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install the nut securing the A/C suction and liquid line assembly to the A/C expansion valve.
  5. Connect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the HVAC wire harness connector.
  6. Install rear floor ducts to the two floor studs then install the two retainers
  7. Install front carpet. Refer to CARPET, FLOOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  8. Install the instrument panel. Refer to PANEL, INSTRUMENT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  9. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
  10. Fill the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  11. Evacuate the refrigerant system. Refer to PLUMBING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  12. Adjust the refrigerant oil level. Refer to OIL, REFRIGERANT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  13. Charge the refrigerant system. Refer to PLUMBING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
