4 Wheel Drive: Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the rear wheels. Refer to REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the muffler as necessary. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, 1.3L or MUFFLER, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, 2.4L .
  4. Remove the rear halfshafts. Refer to REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the rear drive line module. Refer to REMOVAL .
  6. Raise the vehicle and using a suitable marking device, mark the position of the crossmember on the rear frame rails (1).

  7. Remove the bolts (1) and remove the rear suspension control arms.

  8. Remove the nuts (2) and separate the stabilizer bar links (1) at the stabilizer bar.

    NOTE:

    The following step requires the use of universal tool 2000043000, body centering conical/round pin 2000043300, crossmember centering pin/bracket 2000043500 and crossmember centering pin 2000043600

  9. Using a suitable hydraulic lift, support the support the rear suspension crossmember with the tools (1a, 1b, 1c and 1d), as shown in the figure.

  10. Remove the bolts (1a) and remove the rear suspension crossmember (1b).
  11. If needed, remove the following components:
