Removal And Installation: Installation

CAUTION:

The balance shaft/oil pump assembly bolts are tightened using a torque plus angle procedure. The bolts must be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down the bolts must be replaced.

  1. Check the balance shaft/oil pump bolts for necking by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale (2) the bolt must be replaced.
  2. Clean the balance shaft/oil pump assembly mounting holes with Mopar® brake parts cleaner.

  3. Check that the oil pump chain and tensioner (1) are in the position shown in the figure.

  4. Align the marks on the balance shaft/oil pump assembly and drive sprocket (1).

  5. With the rear of the balance shaft/oil pump assembly (1a) on a slight downward angle, position the gear into the chain links. Make sure the paint marks are aligned.
  6. Pivot balance shaft/oil pump assembly upwards into position on the ladder frame and install the four balance shaft/oil pump bolts (1b) finger tight.

  7. Tighten the balance shaft/oil pump bolts in the sequence shown, following the 3 step torque plus angle method. Tighten according to the following torque values:
    • Step 1: All to 15 N.m (11 ft. lbs.)
    • Step 2: All to 35 N.m (26 ft. lbs.)
    • Step 3: All an additional 90° Do not use a torque wrench for this step.

  8. Double check the alignment marks to ensure the timing marks between the oil pump gear and oil pump chain are aligned (1).

  9. Remove the tie strap (3).
  10. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolt (2).
  11. Verify that the tensioner (1) has fully extended and is applying pressure to the guide and chain (4).

  12. Install the splash shield (1) and tighten the bolts to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  13. Install the oil pan. Refer to PAN, OIL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  14. If removed, install the oil filter and fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND FILTER CHANGE  .
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
