Checking VVAA Oil Pressure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jeep Renegade. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

This test can be used to help diagnose Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) faults. Due to restricted access to the oil pressure switch, it is recommended to first perform this procedure to check VVAA oil pressure at the oil temperature sensor.

  1. Disconnect and remove the oil temperature sensor. Refer to SENSOR, OIL TEMPERATURE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  2. Install an appropriate threaded adapter (1).
  3. Install the (special tool #C-3292A, Gauge, Pressure) (2) into the fitting (1).
  4. Start the engine and record the reading on the oil pressure gauge. Compare this reading to the oil pressure specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS  .
    NOTE:

If the engine will not start, note the oil pressure gauge reading during the start attempt.

  5. No oil pressure or low oil pressure at the oil temperature sensor can be due to the following:
    • Clogged VVAA filter screen
    • Pressure relief valve stuck open
    • Clogged oil pump pick-up screen
    • Engine oil pump malfunction
  6. To determine if a clogged VVAA filter screen is the source of low or no oil pressure, check the engine oil pressure at the oil pressure switch. Refer to CHECKING ENGINE OIL PRESSURE  .

  7. If oil pressure is acceptable at the oil pressure switch, but low at the oil temperature sensor, remove the cylinder head (1) and inspect the VVAA filter screen (3). Refer to CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  8. After the test is complete, remove the oil pressure gauge and install the oil temperature sensor. Refer to SENSOR, OIL TEMPERATURE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
