Removal And Installation: Removal
The intake manifold will be removed with the cylinder head.
- Perform the fuel system pressure release procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Remove the engine cover and clean air hose. Refer to HOSE, CLEAN AIR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to
BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM - 2.4L .
- Remove the MAP sensor (1). Refer to SENSOR, MANIFOLD AIR PRESSURE (MAP), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disengage the two wire harness retainers (2) from the intake manifold.NOTE:
FWD shown, 4X4 similar
- Remove the bolt (2), two nuts (1) and the lower intake manifold support bracket (3).
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
- Disconnect the throttle body wire harness connector (1) and remove the wire harness retainer (3) from the throttle body (2).NOTE:
Wrap shop towels around hose to catch any gasoline spillage.
- Disconnect the purge vapor line (2) from the purge solenoid.
- Disconnect the fuel line (1) from the fuel rail. Refer to the appropriate service information
.
- To remove the foam pad, cut the pad along the score line (1). Make sure care is taken to not make contact with any other components while cutting the pad. Do not cut beyond the line
. Remove the pad from the fuel rail once split.
- If equipped, disconnect the brake booster hose from the intake manifold.
- Disengage the two wire harness retainers (3) from the intake manifold.
- Unlock and disconnect the purge solenoid wire harness connector (1).
- Unlock and disconnect the four VVAA solenoid wire harness connectors (3).
- Unlock and disconnect the four fuel injector wire harness connectors (4).
- Remove the vacuum pump and thermostat. Refer to THERMOSTAT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the ignition coils and cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to
MANIFOLD, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE
.CAUTION:
When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve or piston damage.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front) to align the timing cover mark (1) with the damper notch (2) to place the number one cylinder piston at top-dead-center on the compression stroke.
- Remove the engine timing cover, tensioner and timing chain. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the tensioner arm bolt (3), bushing and tensioner arm (4).
- Remove the fixed chain guide bolts (2) and the timing chain guide (1).
- Remove the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA). Refer to ASSEMBLY, VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the camshaft. Refer to
CAMSHAFT, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.NOTE:
If the rocker arms are to be reused, identify their positions so that they can be reassembled into their original locations.
- Remove the rocker arms (1)
.
NOTE:If the hydraulic lash adjusters are to be reused, identify their positions so that they can be reassembled into their original locations.
- Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters (1).
- Remove the cylinder head bolts in the reverse order of the sequence shown.NOTE:
There is a foam insulator that is sandwiched between the intake manifold and the engine block that may fall off when the cylinder head is removed. The foam pad must be reinstalled during assembly.
- Remove the cylinder head and intake manifold from the engine block.
- Remove and DISCARD
the cylinder head gasket (2).
- Remove the Variable Valve Actuation Assembly (VVAA) oil supply filter (1) from the engine block.NOTE:
If required, remove the intake manifold from the cylinder head:
- Remove the nut (1), bolt (3) and the throttle body support bracket (2).
- Remove the four screws (1) and the intake manifold silencer cover.
- Remove the five bolts (1 and 2) and remove the intake manifold from the cylinder head.
- Inspect the cylinder head and cylinder head components. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD, INSPECTION .
