Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR EXTERNAL OBJECTS ON THE KEYCHAIN THAT MAY CAUSE INTERFERENCE 
    NOTE:

    An external Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) key (and/or pass/radio key), such as one used to gain access to a 24 hour gym, can cause this DTC to set and create a no start condition.

    1. Inspect the customer's key chain for any type of RFID key.
    2. If one is not found, question the customer to see if a spare key chain has this RFID key on it or if it was removed from the original key chain before the vehicle was released for service.

      Is there an RFID key or pass present on one of the customer's key chains?

      Yes 

      • Remove the ignition key from the vehicle and remove the RFID key from the key chain.
      • Then, Go to  2

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, select View the PCM DTCs.

      Is the DTC Active at this time?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Go To  8
  3. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any Can C or Can B DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK FOR IMPLAUSIBLE OR INVALID DATA RECEIVED FROM VEHICLE SECURITY CONTROL MODULE 
    1. With the scan tool, attempt to communicate with the BCM.

      Can the scan tool communicate with the BCM?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

  5. CHECK FOR ANY BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) DTCS ACTIVE OR PENDING 
    1. With the scan tool, check for BCM DTCs.

      Are any DTCs active or pending in the BCM?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. VERIFY THAT THE PROPER VIN IS PROGRAMMED INTO THE PCM 
    1. With the scan tool, display the VIN that is programmed in the PCM.

      Has the proper VIN been programmed into the PCM?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Program the correct VIN into the PCM and retest.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Ignition on, engine not running.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all BCM and PCM DTCs.
    4. Attempt to start and idle the engine.
    5. With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs.

      Does the scan tool display this code?

      Yes 

      NOTE:

      Go To  9

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK THE IGNITION KEY FOR PROPER CODING AND OPERATION 
    NOTE:

    You must obtain the transponder identification code.

    NOTE:

    This DTC could have been set if the RF Hub harness connector was disconnected or if the RF Hub was replaced recently.

    NOTE:

    All keys that the customer uses for this vehicle must be tested to verify they are operating properly.

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. Verify the correct VIN is programmed into the PCM and Body Control Module (BCM).
    3. Turn the ignition off.
    4. With each customer key turn the ignition key on and crank the engine to start.
    5. With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs. Look for P0513.

      Is the DTC P0513 still active?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Test Complete.
        NOTE:

        If this DTC cannot be reset, it could have been an actual theft attempt.

  9. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the poor connections.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
