Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR A MODIFIED OR AFTERMARKET AIR FILTER BOX 
    NOTE:

    This fault can potentially be set by an aftermarket Air Filter Box and/or filter. Non factory filter assemblies are not calibrated to the factory PCM thresholds or settings. If the vehicle has a modified filter assembly and this fault is set, notify the customer that the vehicle needs to be returned back to the stock assembly in order to properly repair the vehicle.

    1. Visually inspect for an aftermarket Air Filter Box and/or filter.

      Was the Air Filter Box and/or filter modified or aftermarket?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any cylinder misfire, Crank Sensor, MAF/Intake Air Sensor, Boost Pressure Sensor, Differential Pressure Sensor, or Fuel Injector DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (K41) O2 SENSOR 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Oxygen Sensor harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K41) O2 Sensor 1/1 Signal circuit at the Oxygen Sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the (K41) O2 Sensor 1/1 Signal circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE (K41) O2 SENSOR 1/1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance between of the (K41) O2 Sensor 1/1 Signal circuit between the Oxygen Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (K41) O2 Sensor 1/1 Signal circuit for an open/high resistance
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM 
    1. Reconnect the O2 Sensor 1/1 harness connector.
    2. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM .

      Were any fuel system problems found?

      Yes 

      • Perform the appropriate repairs to the fuel system.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS FOR RESTRICTIONS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the exhaust system for damaged components that could cause exhaust flow blockage.
    3. Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and turbocharger related hoses/tubes and connections for blockage or other damage.
    4. Inspect the air filter for excessive dirt, soiling or other problems that may cause restricted air flow.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK THE INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR LEAKS 
    1. Perform the Engine Diagnosis and Testing INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION test procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION .

      `

      Is there evidence of a leak?

      Yes 

      • Perform the appropriate repair as indicated.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM FOR LEAKS 
    1. Check for visible signs (soot streaks) of external EGR system leaks around the V-band clamps and connections. Ensure that all torques are within specifications.

      Were any EGR system leaks found?

      Yes 

      • Perform the appropriate repairs to the EGR system.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  10
  10. VISUALLY CHECK THE O2 SENSOR FOR SOOT BUILDUP 
    NOTE:

    Excessive soot build up can be caused by over fueling. If excessive soot build up is present, the fuel system operation should be checked and the O2 sensor should be cleaned.

    1. Remove the O2 Sensor.
    2. Clean the soot from the O2 Sensor.
    3. Reinstall the O2 Sensor.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    6. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    8. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

  11. INSTALL A NEW OXYGEN SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTC 
    1. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    2. Install a new Oxygen Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, OXYGEN, REMOVAL .
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 MPH. Perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
    6. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
    7. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.

      Is the status Active for this DTC?

      Yes 

      • Go To  12

      No 

  12. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the poor connections.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
