Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on, run the engine to operating temperature
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC reset?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any other aftertreatment DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE BATTERIES AND CHARGING SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION 
    1. Ensure that the Batteries and charging system are operating correctly and providing the proper system voltage.

      Were any issues found with the Batteries or charging system?

      Yes 

      • Perform the appropriate repairs.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE NOX SENSOR 1/1 GROUND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE OR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the engine off.
    2. Disconnect the NOx Sensor 1/1 Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
      CAUTION:

      Do not attempt to disconnect the NOx harness connector between the NOx Sensor Probe and the NOx Sensor Module. This connector is permanently attached to the NOx Sensor Module. Any attempt to remove this connector will permanently damage the NOx Sensor.

    3. Turn the ignition on, engine off.
    4. Measure the voltage across the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit and the NOx Sensor 1/1 Ground circuit at the NOx Sensor 1/1 (vehicle harness) harness connector.

      Does the voltage read within 1.0 Volt of battery voltage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the (Z909) Ground circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE NOX SENSOR FOR DAMAGED WIRES OR DAMAGED TERMINALS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
      CAUTION:

      Do not attempt to disconnect the NOx harness connector between the NOx Sensor Probe and the NOx Sensor Module. This connector is permanently attached to the NOx Sensor Module. Any attempt to remove this connector will permanently damage the NOx Sensor.

    2. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the NOx Sensor 1/1 and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    3. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    4. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. INSTALL A NEW NOX SENSOR 1/1 AND RETEST FOR DTC 
    NOTE:

    The NOx Sensor consists of a Module and a Probe (with a harness in between) which cannot be serviced separately. They are replaced as one unit.

    CAUTION:

    Do not attempt to disconnect the NOx harness connector between the NOx Sensor Probe and the NOx Sensor Module. This connector is permanently attached to the NOx Sensor Module. Any attempt to remove this connector will permanently damage the NOx Sensor.

    1. Install a new NOx Sensor 1/1 in accordance with the service information. Refer to SENSOR, NOX, REMOVAL .
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
    4. Start the engine and run it until it reaches operating temperature.
    5. Test drive the vehicle under normal operating conditions.
      NOTE:

      During cold ambient temperatures, it may be necessary to test drive the vehicle for an extended period to properly cycle the fail conditions for this DTC.

    6. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Does the scan tool display this DTC?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

  7. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Repair the poor connections.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
